OBITUARY of Adam Haag source Alton Democrat of Jan 20, 1906

Adam Haag senior one of Hospers oldest settlers and most highly respected citizens died Sunday midnight after an illness of three months from brain trouble. Deceased was born in Bavaria eighty years ago and came to this country when a boy of eighteen.

Two years later Miss hillipina Spettel came from the same town and four years after her arrival they were married in New York City. That was fiftyfive years ago last August. After four years in New York they moved to Washington county Iowa.

Here they lived till the war broke out and deceased enlisted and served for three years, They left there in 1872 and took a claim two and a half miles east of Hospers where they endured all the hardships of pioneer life. Two years ago they moved to town.

Of eleven children nine survive to comfort the mother in her hour of sorrow. They are Jake of O'Brien county, Frank on the old homestead, Mrs. George Selig of Hospers, Mrs. John Hain and Adam junior of Sheldon, Tony of Hospers, Mrs. Nic Stevens of Waterville Minnesota, Alfonse of York Nebraska and Miss Emma at home.

The funeral was held Tuesday from St. Anthony's church and drew a large crowd. Adam Haag was a man of fine appearance and character and he and his estimable wife were the kind of people to whom all their neighbors look up. They have a large family of grandchildren and several great grandchildren. The community is the loser by Adam Haag's death and the sympathy of all is with his bereaved family.
