Mrs. Henry Schmidt Born In Civil War Days

Sadness struck the Rock Valley community Sunday when it became known that Mrs. Henry Schmidt, 78, a resident of this vicinity for 50 years, had died unexpectedly Sunday evening after a cerebral hemorrhage suffered on Saturday, May 10.

Lena Buschmann was born on Sept. 29, 1863, at St. Donatus, Jackson county, Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Buschmann. She was united in marriage to Henry Schmidt in 1891 and the couple moved immediately to a farm near Rock Valley. They celebrated their golden wedding the past March.

Surviving are her husband; 2 children, a daughter, Mrs. Henry Stoltenberg of Hawarden, and a son, Earl Schmidt of Rock Valley; one brother, John Buschmann; and two sisters—Mrs. Mary Bahr and Mrs. Emma Meinann of Spragueville. A son preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held in the Lutheran church at Alvord with Rev. Lutz in charge, and burial was at Valley View cemetery here. The services were attended by many old Rock Valley friends of the family.

From the Rock Valley Bee, May 23, 1941:

MRS. HENRY SCHMIDT, by Rev. Fred Lutz

Carilina Margaretha Adelheir Bushmann, a daughter of John and Wilhelmin Bushmann, was born at St. Donatus, Iowa, on September 29, 1862. In early infancy she was baptized in the Lutheran faith at St. Donatus.

Her Christian training was received partially at Bellevue, Iowa, and at Spragueville, when about the age of 15 she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the Pastor Gyr. She received her secular training in the rural public schools in Jackson County, Iowa. Her girlhood days were spent at home with her parents, after which time she did general housework, working faithfully for one family for 7 years.

Her faithful service and her love were not left unnoticed, for the casual acquaintance of a young man from out here in the west, resolved into blooming love and after many years of correspondence, she became the bride of Henry Schmidt on February 28, 1891, at Spragueville, Iowa, when the Pastor L. M. Reck united them in holy wedlock. Three children, two sons and a daughter, blessed this union.

It is not given to overly many married couples to observe their golden wedding, but on February 28, 1941, in the circle of many intimate friends, their golden wedding was observed to the Glory of God.

The cross of God’s children was not spared this couple, for after having been lent their first son for about 2½ years, they cheerfully gave him up to the Lord.

Mrs. Schmidt had been in comparatively good health these many years, though her heart had been troubling her, and for which cause she had been in a doctor’s care. Last Saturday she had gone to Rock Rapids to do some shopping, and was in evident good spirits. Arriving home, she went out to the garden to set out some plants she had purchased. A stroke overwhelmed her and everything that love and devotion could bring to bear, was done for her. But she never regained consciousness. On Sunday evening about 10 o’clock she answered her summons to rest from her labors.

She leaves to mourn her end, her loving husband, children—Earl at home and Mrs. Minnie Stoltenberg; 2 sisters—Mrs. Emma Niemann and Mrs. Mary Bahr, both of Spragueville; also a brother, John Bushmann, of Spragueville; 2 grandchildren, and many other relatives, and a host of friends. – Alvord Register.
