Former Granville Man Passes On

Jacob Goergen, well known former Granville man, died very suddenly on Feb. 1st at Vancouver, Wash., where he lived for the past three and one half years. He was visiting a friend just outside Vancouver when suddenly stricken.

He was born Feb. 14, 1883, at Granville, son of the late Theo. and Elizabeth Goergen, pioneer settlers, and was 57 years, 11 months and 77 days of age at the time of his death. He was employed on the Hoffman construction project, Vancouver Barracks.

He leaves to mourn his loss two brothers, Mike A. of Granville, Math. of Redondo Beach, Calif., and two sisters: Mrs. Elizabeth Hoefler of Granville and Mrs. Melanie Schleich, Colfax, Wash. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death, namely Dominic and Frank J., the latter having passed on last August, Mrs. Mary Hoefler and Veronica Goergen.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s church, Mt. Angel, Oregon, on Feb. 4th and interment was at Calvary Cemetery there, Rev. Father Hildebrand of Mt. Angel officiating. Pallbearers were Greg. Schemmel, John Schneider, S. Bindner, Frank Meyer, J. A. Kaiser and Will Conrad.

Coming to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Nick Schleich, Colfax, Wash.; Mr. and Mrs. Greg. Schemmel, Silverton, Oregon; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Goergen, Mr. and Mrs. John Schneider, Mr. and Mrs. Milo Schneider, Newberg, Oregon; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bentz and daughters of Portland; Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Kaiser, Mr. and Mrs. Will Conrad, Mt. Angel, Oregon.

He was a man of cheerful and kindly disposition, ever ready to lend a helping hand and his memory will be ever cherished by his family and many friends.

Jacob J. Goergen, 58, of Orchards rt. 1, died Saturday. He was an employee of the Hoffman Construction company of Vancouver.

He was born February 14, 1883, in Grandville, Ia., and had lived in Clark county the past three and one-half years. He was a member of the Catholic church and of the Carpenters union No. 1715.

He is survived by two brothers, Frank Goergen, Iowa, and Math Goergen, California; and two sisters, Mrs. Melanie Schleich, Colfax, Wash., and Mrs. Elizabeth Hoesler, Iowa.

Requiem mass will be read at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mt. Angel Catholic church, Mt. Angel, Ore., with interment in the Mt. Angel cemetery. The Vancouver Funeral chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Goergen, born 14 Feb 1883 in Granville, Sioux County, Iowa; died 1 Feb 1941 in Vancouver, Clark County, Wash.; buried in Calvary Cemetery, Mount Angel, Marion County, Oregon. Parents Theodore Goergen (1830-1905) and Elizabeth Larrosch Goergen (1848-1932). Eight siblings listed. There is a photo of his headstone.

There is a World War I draft registration card (Sept. 1918) for Jacob Joseph Goergen, age 35, born 14 Feb 1883, living in Carter, Choteau County, Montana, where his nearest relative Elizabeth Goergen also lives, farming for himself; medium height and build, grey eyes, dark hair.

The 1920 U.S. census shows him (age 35) working as a farm laborer on his widowed mother Elizabeth’s farm in Granville. In 1930 (age 47) he is still living in Granville with his mother, not on a farm, and working as an odd jobs laborer. He was not readily located in the 1940 census.
