HOSPERS, Iowa - Edward Schnurr, 76, of Hospers died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital in Orange City, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hospers, with his son Monsignor Dennis M. Schnurr officiating and with Bishop Lawrence D. Soens and Bishop Daniel DeNardo in attendance. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.Mr. Schnurr was born July 18, 1921, in rural Granville, Iowa, the son of Herman and Emma (Niichel) Schnurr. He was raised near Granville and attended both rural school and St. Joseph's Catholic School in Granville. He moved with his family to Hospers, where he attended St. Anthony's Catholic School. He then farmed with his parents.
He married Eleanor Jungers on Nov. 18, 1942, in Hospers. The couple lived near Hospers, where they farmed until 1945. He was employed with Jungers Elevator, Wounstra Meats, Wounstra Packing Plant and then managed the Kerr McGee gas station in Hospers until 1979, when he went into semi-retirement. He continued to do small engine repair.
He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, where he mowed the church grounds for many years. He enjoyed small engine repairs.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Delores and her husband Marv Schultes of Hastings, Neb., Carolyn and her husband Larry Arens of Remsen and Irene Brant of Hospers; three sons, Richard and his wife Judy of Hospers, Monsignor Dennis M. of Washington D.C. and Mike of Alton, Iowa; his mother of Fulda, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six sisters, Helen Land of Lakewood, Calif., Blanche Eich of Sheldon, Iowa, Mildred and her husband Pete Thom of Phoenix, Ariz., Irene Cullin of Des Moines, Mary and her husband James Ahlers of Fulda, Minn. and Bertill and her husband Bob Nepper of Le Sueur, Minn.; and three brothers, Bernard of Excelsior, Minn. Donald and his wife Mildred and Gerald, all of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Lucille Joanning.
Pallbearers will be Bryan and Ken Arens, Dan and Kevin Barnes, Keith Schnurr, Michael and Thomas Schultes.
