From the Sioux County Index (Hull), January 26, 1940:

Mrs. Jacob De Boer passed away on Thursday morning, January 18, after a long illness. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1:00 o’clock at the Peter De Boer home, and at 1:30 at the First Reformed church. Boyden Reporter.

From the Alton Democrat, January 26, 1940, Boyden News Items:

Mrs. Jacob De Boer passed away on Thursday morning, Jan. 18, at the Hull hospital, following a brief illness.

Mrs. De Boer, nee Gertie De Valk, was born at Minnertage, the Netherlands, in the province of Friesland, on July 16, 1870, and was 69 years old at the time of her death. She came to America some 40 years ago and settled in Boyden. For the past 20 years she had lived in town, moving here from Hull where she lived for 11 years. She was married to Mr. De Boer on April 25, 1898, in New York City and three children were born to the union.

Surviving are the widower and three children, namely, Gertrude (Mrs. Peter Kooistra) of Sanborn, Peter of Boyden and Jessie of Long Beach, Calif. She also leaves 12 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the First Reformed church with Rev. J. W. Brink officiating.

Mrs. Jacob De Boer, aged 69, died at the Hull hospital, Thursday morning, following a brief illness.

Mrs. De Boer, nee Gertrude De Valk, was born at Minnertsga, Netherlands, Province of Friesland, on July 16, 1870, a daughter of Gerrit and Gertrude De Valk. She came to the United States in 1899 where on April 25th she was united in marriage to Jacob De Boer. To this union three children were born, namely: Gertrude, Mrs. Peter Kooistra of Sanborn, Peter of Boyden, and Jessie of Long Beach, Calif.

Mr. and Mrs. De Boer settled in Boyden, Ia. After residing also in Hull, Ia. for 11 years, they again made their home in Boyden where they have lived the past 20 years.

Surviving her besides the immediate family are 12 grandchildren, a twin sister, Mrs. M. Post of Bellflower, Calif., and two brothers, John and Richard De Valk in the Netherlands. One brother and one sister preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 22, 1940 at one o’clock in the afternoon at the home and one-thirty o’clock at the First Reformed church. The Rev. J. W. Brink conducted the services. Interment was made at the Boyden Cemetery. The Sioux Center Burial Association had charge of the funeral arrangements.

Out of town relatives and friends attending were: Mr. and Mrs. M. De Boer of Holland, Minn., Mrs. C. De Vries and children of Pipestone, Minn., Mr. C. Van Englenhoven of Luverne, Minn., Mrs. S. De Boer of Rock Valley, Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Brinkman, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Grooters, Mrs. G. Van Aalsburg, Mr. and Mrs. D. Ten Kley, of Sheldon, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Peters and daughter Gertrude, Mrs. G. Vanden Berg, Mr. and Mrs. N. De Ruyter, and Mrs. J. Hoekstra of Rock Valley, Ia.

RESEARCH NOTES

Her death certificate (informant Peter De Boer) has her as Mrs. Jacob De Boer; born July 16, 1870 in Minnertsga, Netherlands; parents Gerrit De Valk and Gertie Kramer; in the U.S. 40 years; died at the Hull Hospital, where she had been a patient 4 days, at 8:50 a.m. January 18, 1940; immediate cause, pneumonia, contracted Jan. 17; due to fracture of right hip, intra-ca???ular, in an accident at home, on Jan. 14; due to chronic nephritis; other conditions, myocarditis.

Her headstone (photo on FindaGrave.com) also has her as just Mrs. J. De Boer.

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index record for her as Gerritje de Valk; parents Gerrit Rinses de Valk, age 38, a laborer, and Gerritje Simons Kramer; born at Minnertsga 16 July 1870.

The 1900 U.S. census for Boyden, Iowa shows Ricte[??] De Boer (30), born Feb. 1870 in Holland, married 1 year, immigrated in 1885, naturalized, a day laborer; wife Gertrude (29), born July 1870 in Holland, no immigration data; and daughter Gertrude, 11 months, born June 1889 in Iowa. The 1910 census shows Jake (40) and Gertie (39), married 11 years, with daughter Gertie Jr. (10) and son Peter (4), living in Hull, where he is a lumberyard employee. The 1920 census shows Jacob and Gertie, with son Peter (14) and daughter Jessee (6) living in Alton, where he is a laborer at the elevator; both immigrated in 1883, both naturalized in 1910. The 1930 census shows Jacob, Gertrude, and Jessie living in Boyden, where he is a truck driver for a gas and oil company; it shows both Jacob and Gertrude as immigrating in 1898.

The New York Extracted Marriage Index 1866-1937 on Ancestry.com shows Gerritze Devalk and Jacob Deboer married 25 April 1899 in Manhattan.
