He was the son of Jan Jans Koster 1784-1862 and Niesje Jans Hartman 1785-1831, his first wife was Roelofje Klaas Koster 1806-1866 with whom he had a large family of about 14 children, He then married Aaltje Alberts Kloeze 1840-1894 on 31 Oct 1868 at Zuidwolde Drenthe Netherlands, and they had 5 more children.
