From the Alton Democrat, September 1, 1939, Orange City news:

T. E. Zuidema Dies Saturday Morning

Saturday morning, August 26, Mr. T. E. Zuidema passed away in the Pioneer Home in Orange City at the age of 87 years.

He was born at Wynaldum, Friesland, the Netherlands, in 1852. In 1881 he was married to Miss Ybeltje Lynstra and a year later came to America and settled on a farm near Orange City. They later moved to Springfield, South Dakota. Seven years ago Mrs. Zuidema passed away and two years later Mr. Zuidema moved into the Pioneer Home.

Surviving him are two children, Mrs. E. Kooi of Lansing, Ill., and Mr. E. C. Zuidema of Walnut Grove, Minn., five grandchildren and one sister in the Netherlands. He was a member of the First Reformed church at Orange City.

Funeral services were held from the Pioneer Home with burial in the local cemetery.

OVERLEDEN—ZUIDEMA

Saturday, 26 August, Mr. T. E. Zuidema passed away in the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, aged 87 years and 4 months, due to diabetes.

He was born in Wynaldum, Friesland province, Netherlands, April 3, 1852, and there in the year 1881 he married Miss Ybeltje Lystra. In the year 1882 they left the old Fatherland and went to America, settling in Orange City, where they farmed. They also did this for 13 years near Springfield, S.D. His wife preceded him in death seven years ago.

[Survivors same as above. His sister resides at Franeker, Friesland, Netherlands.] The funeral services were held in the Pioneer Memorial Home, which is a home for the elderly in Orange City, and burial was made in the Orange City cemetery.

Mr. T. E. Zuidema died in the early morning on Saturday, 26 August, aged 87 years and 4 months. He had not been ill. He did not feel very well on Friday, but was much better that evening, and in the morning he was no more. He had suffered from diabetes for years. Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the Home, conducted by Rev. H. Colenbrander. His children attended – Mrs. E. Kooi and two children, from Lansing, Ill., and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Zuidema and children from Walnut Grove, Minn.; and his friends Mr. and Mrs. Jake Namminga and Mrs. D. Heemstra, from Springfield, S.D., were also here for the funeral.

RESEARCH NOTES

His death certificate (informant Mrs. Jocara Kooi) gives his name as Taeke C. [or E.?] Zuidema; born April 3, 1852 in the Netherlands; parents Egbert Zuidema and Teatje [surname unknown]; widower of Ybeltje Zuidema; died at 5:00 a.m. August 26, 1929; cause, coronary embolism; contributory causes, diabetes mellitus and arteriosclerosis.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has him as Teake E. Zuidema. His FindaGrave.com page has him as Taeke Eiberts Zuidema, born 3 April 1852 in Wijnaldum, Harlingen Municipality, Friesland, Netherlands; died 20[sic] Aug 1939 in Orange City; buried in West Lawn Cemetery, Orange City; wife Ybeltje Leistra Zuidema (1855-1932, married 1881); children Jocara Zuidema Kooi (1886-1955) and Egbert Cornelius Zuidema (1889-1980). The Iowa Gravestones Photo Project has a photo of his and Ybeltje’s joint headstone, with his name as Teake E. (however, other official sources spell it Taeke).

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index record for Taeke Zuidema, parents Eibert Kornelis Zuidema and Tettje Taekes Tuinstra, born 3 April 1852, “parents living in Wijnaldum.” It also has a marriage index record for groom Taeke Zuidema, age 29, born in Wijnaldum, parents Eibert Kornelis Zuidema and Tettje Taekes Tuinstra; bride Ybeltje Leistra, age 25, born in Wijnaldum, parents Pieter Klazes Leistra and Japke Pieters Hofstra; married 10 Sept 1881 in Barradeel, Friesland.

The 1900 U.S. census shows the Zuidema family farming in Hancock, Bon Homme County, South Dakota: Taeke (48, born April 1852), immigrated 1884, taken out first papers, married 19 years; wife Ybeltje (44, born Sept. 1855), mother of 2 children, both living, immigrated 1884; daughter Jopke (13, born Aug. 1886 in Iowa); son Egbert C. (10, born Aug 1889 in Iowa).

In 1910 he (as Teake), Ybeltje, and Jocarra are living in Orange City; he is naturalized and has his own income. The 1920 census has him as Taeke. The 1930 census has him as Teerke and his wife as Isabel.
