From the Alton Democrat, November 10, 1966, Orange City news:

Nick Mouw, 73, of Elgin, Ill., formerly of Orange City, passed away from a heart attack Oct. 31. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the funeral home at Central City, Iowa. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Case Mouw of Orange City and will be remembered by friends for his many years of horse racing in this area.

After his marriage to Grace Van Beek is Sioux Center in 1916 he was active as a farmer in the Sibley area. His wife died in 1939. Mr. and Mrs. Mouw were the parents of one son, Clifford, who new resides at Mesa, Arizona. Mr. Mouw remarried and with his wife Edith, resided in Elgin, Ill, where he continued horse racing. They were the parents of one son, Nick, who with his mother survives.

Also surviving are two grandchildren and his sister, Mrs. Wm. Bloemendaal of Spencer, one brother Henry of Maurice. Mr. and Mrs. Mouw and Mr. and Mrs. Bloemendaal attended the funeral of their brother at Central City.

Nick Mouw, 73, a former resident of the Central City area who was presently living in Elgin, Ill., passed away at 8:40 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, 1966 at the Maywood, Ill. racetrack, where he was racing horses.

He was born the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Mouw on March 17, 1893 at Orange City, Ia. On Aug. 20, 1942 he was married to Edith Sanford at Cedar Rapids, Ia. Mr. Mouw was an owner, trainer and driver of racehorses all of his life.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, Clifford K. Mouw of Mesa, Ariz. and Nicholas A. Mouw of Marion; two granddaughters, Mrs. Marsha Gonzales and Charmaine Mouw of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Mrs. William (Hattie) Bloemendaal of Spencer and a brother, Henry Mouw of Maurice, Ia.

Services were 3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at the Passmore-Murdoch Chapel in Central City, conducted by the Rev. Mearle Griffith, pastor of the Central City Methodist church. Interment was in Mt. Clark Cemetery.

His FindaGrave.com page gives his parents as Cornelis D. Mouw (1864-1956) and Kate Brouwer Mouw (1864-1935); siblings Henry C. Mouw (1885-1975) and Hattie Mouw Bloemendaal (1897-1993); wives Grace Van Beek Mouw (1893-1939, married 1917) and Edith Sanford Mouw (1922-1988); one son listed, Clifford Kenneth Mouw (1918-1982). It gives his birth date as 17 March 1893, with a photo of his headstone showing birth year 1893; but see below for birth date discrepancy.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1916/1917 shows groom Nick Mouw, age 26, resident of Orange City, a farmer, born in Orange City, parents Cornelius Mouw and Kate Brouwer; bride Grace Van Beek, age 24, resident of Sioux Center, parents Cornelius Van Beek and Coba Verhoeven; married at Sioux Center March 18, 1917.

His World War I draft registration card (June 1917) has Nick Mouw, age 26, born March 17. 1891 in Orange City, Iowa, home address Sibley, Iowa, farming in East Holman Township, married, medium height and weight, blue eyes, brown hair.

His World War II draft registration card has Nick Mouw, age 51, born March 17, 1891 in Sioux County, resident of Sec. 12, Goeway Township, Sibley, Osceola County, Iowa; a farmer, self-employed; person who will always know his address is H. E. Scott, Sibley, Iowa; height 67 inches, weight 160 pounds, blue eyes, black hair, light complexion.

The 1910 U.S. census gives his age as 19. The Cornelis Mouw family was not readily located in the 1900 census.
