From the Sioux Center News, May 25, 1939:

FORMER RESIDENT DIES AT SIBLEY

Mrs. Nick Mouw, the former Grace Van Beek, died at the hospital at Sibley last week following a brief illness. Daughter of Mr. C. Van Beek, she was well known in this community. She is survived by one son and her husband, her father and four sisters and one brother. Funeral services were held Monday at Sibley. Interment took place at Sioux Center.

OBITUARIES—MRS. NIC MOUW

Funeral services for Mrs. Nic Mouw were held at the Sibley Reformed church Monday afternoon. Mrs. Mouw, 46, died of complications following an operation for a ruptured appendix at the Sibley hospital. She is survived by her husband and a son, Clifford, and several brothers and sisters. Interment was made at the Sioux Center cemetery.

Mrs. Vermeer’s Sister Died

Mrs. Dick Mouw of Sibley, Iowa, sister of Mrs. G. G. Vermeer of Rock Valley, died in a Sibley hospital last week Friday following an operation for a ruptured appendix. Funeral services were held in Sibley with Rev. Havenhorst officiating and interment was made in the cemetery in Sioux City[sic]. Mrs. Mouw was 45 years of age.

Mrs. Vermeer’s twin sister of Tonopa, Nevada, and her brother, Andrew Van Beek, of Ishpenning, Mich., were present for the funeral service. Others who are left to mourn are her husband and son, Clifford, and Mrs. Mouw’s father, Mr. Van Beek, of Sioux Center.

Her death certificate has Grace Mouw, wife of Nick Mouw; born August 17, 1893 in Sioux Center; parents Cornelius Van Beek and Jacoba Ver Hoven, both born in Holland; resident of Goewey Township, Osceola County, for 22 years; died in the Schoon Hospital, Sibley, at 1:20 p.m. May 19, 1939; cause, ruptured appendix, May 3 or 4, and peritonitis; operated on to drain peritoneal cavity, May 12, 1939.

Her FindaGrave.com page also gives her birth date as 17 Aug 1893, although the photo of her headstone gives her birth year as 1894. Parents Cornelius Van Beek (1861-1945) and Jacoba Hoeve Van Beek (1866-1913). Several siblings listed. Husband Nick Mouw (1893-1966, married 1917). Son Clifford Kenneth Mouw (1918-1982). (Her husband’s FindaGrave page shows him to have remarried, to Edith Sanford, and to have died in Illinois.)

The 1900 U.S. census shows the Cornelius Van Beek family living in Welcome Township. Sioux County, with Grace (as Gysjie) born in August 1893.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1916/1917 shows groom Nick Mouw, age 26, resident of Orange City, a farmer, born in Orange City, parents Cornelius Mouw and Kate Brouwer; bride Grace Van Beek, age 24, resident of Sioux Center, parents Cornelius Van Beek and Coba Verhoeven; married at Sioux Center March 18, 1917.
