From the Boyden Reporter, May 18, 1939:

Funeral services were held at Hospers on Wednesday for Bert Landhuis who died as the result of a heart attack on Sunday. Mr. Landhuis, a former Boyden resident, is a brother of J. H. Landhuis of Boyden, and made his home at the home of his sister, the late Mrs. John Rensink sr. for many years.

Bert Landhuis

On Sunday at 12:30 P.M. Bert Landhuis passed away at the state institution at Cherokee following a heart attack, at the age of 61 years, 10 months, 7 days.

He was born July 7, 1874, at Vrezenveen, Overeissel, Netherlands, and came as a boy to America with his parents. After his parents died he made his home with his sister, Mrs. John Rensink, now deceased. Since her death he lived with his other brothers, Henry of Boyden and J. B. Landhuis of Hospers. He also is survived by another brother, Cornelius, residing at Verzenveen, Netherlands.

Funeral services were held Wednesday with services at the M. L. Vander Waal home at 1 P.M. and at the First Reformed church at 1:30 P.M. Burial was at Westlawn cemetery.

His FindaGrave.com page has him as Bertus “Bert” Landhuis, born 9 June 1874 in the Netherlands, died 15 May 1939 at Hospers, buried in Hospers Cemetery; father Bertus L. Landhuis (1833-1913); 3 siblings listed: Jan Landhuis (1863-1930), Ella Landhuis Rensink (1866-1933), and John Bertus Landhuis (1873-1939). It repeats the Boyden Reporter obituary, inserting his sister’s name as Aaltje Rensink and his parents as Bertus and Lena (Fikkas) Landhuis.

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index record for Bertus Leonard Landhuis, born 7 June 1874 in Vriezenveen, Overijssel, parents Bertus Landhuis, age 40, a farmer, and Lena Fikkert.

The 1900 U.S. census shows him (as Bert, age 26, born June 1874) living in Hospers with his parents, Bertus and Jantje Landhuis, immigrated in 1882, not naturalized, working on the parental farm as a farm laborer. In the 1910 census (Bertus L.) he is still living with his parents and working as a farmer, his father being a retired farmer; immigrated in 1883, naturalized.

His World War I draft registration card (Sept. 1918) shows him (Bertus) as a citizen by father’s naturalization before registrant’s majority; occupation farming, working for Ben Rensink, Sheldon; nearest relative Johannes Landhuis, Hospers; medium height and build, brown eyes, dark hair, of unsound mind.

In the 1930 census (Bertis) he is living in Hospers with his brother Johans B. Landhuis and Johans’ wife and son; he has no occupation.

His death certificate has him as Bert Landhuis, usual residence Hospers, Iowa, a farmer; in Cherokee State Hospital for 10 months, 5 days; born June 1873; no other personal data; died at 11:50 A.M. May 14, 1939; causes arteriosclerotic heart disease, unset unknown, and coronary occlusion, onset 5-14-1939; contributory cause, psychosis and mental deficiency.
