George H. Abbott, 84, Hawarden, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.

Funeral services was Saturday at American Lutheran Church in Hawarden, with the Reverend Jeff Swanson officiating. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden. Porter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

George H. Abbott was born February 26, 1917 at Hawarden, to Guy and Jessie (Todd) Abbott. He attended school at Hawarden and in 1933 began with the CCC in Salem, Missouri, and Clarion, Iowa. He later worked for Bergs Dairy in Hawarden. He served in the U.S. Army from November 1941 to 1945, being stationed in the Pacific Theatre. He married Marge (Velgersdyk) Carlson on April 21, 1950 at Sioux Falls. In 1936 he began working for Chicago-Northwestern Railroad, retiring in June of 1977 after 41 years of service.

He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees.

Survivors include his wife, Marge of Hawarden; son, Roger of Clarion; stepson, Virgil Carlson of Canton, South Dakota; Verlys Sandahl of Hawarden; two sisters, LaVeta Vande Hoef of Garden Grove, California and Lillian Swanson Blomberg of Matilija Hot Springs, California; eight step-children; 18 step-grandchildren; and a step-great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lloyd; two sisters, Margaret Westling and Jean De Young Schaebble; and several nephews.
