------
The Sioux County Independent of Dec 20, 1879
Herman Mein (Meyn) living ten miles west of Sheldon, died of diphtheria last Sunday. The sabbath previous he had buried a child which died of the same disease. The day before Mr. Mein died just as Dr. Lansing the attending physician arrived, he died as his friends supposed, and he was to all intents and purposes a corpse. Dr. Lansing with the consent of Mrs. Mein, hastily and very successfully opened his wind-pipe when the supposed corpse roused up and commenced to improve, which continued eighteen or twenty hours when he commenced growing weak, and in thirty six hours from the time the operation had be performed died, but in the meantime had slept several hours, made his will, and rested quite easy, passing away without a struggle and apparently without any pain. Of-course he could not speak, but wrote upon a slate. The successful manner in which the operation of reaching and opening the wind-pipe was performed reflects real credit upon the skill of Ft. Lansing, who thinks had the operation been performed before the patient had become so weak, that he would have recovered. There are five children left in the family, three of whom are now suffering from diphtheria. One will not recover with the chances about equal with the other two.
