Mr. Anthony “Tony” Verdoorn, age 99, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2020, at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, December 22, at 1:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink and the Rev. Timothy Breen will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation without the family will be on Monday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Anthony was born on May 25, 1921 in Orange City, the son of William Anthony and Gertrude (Vischer) Verdoorn. He grew up in Orange City, where he attended school.

He was united in marriage to Anna Huisman on October 27, 1942, in Newkirk. They made their home in Bellevue, Nebraska, where Tony built airplanes until being drafted into the United States Army, at which time Ann moved to Orange City. Following his honorable discharge, Tony returned to Orange City, where he and Ann made their home and raised their family. Tony worked at Post Printing and as a milk route driver before becoming a salesman at H&S Manufacturing, which later became Den Hartog Industries, in Hospers. Later in life, he and Ann became residents of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community and the Pioneer Memorial Home, both in Orange City.

Mr. Verdoorn was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City and was a member of the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post, where he served as treasurer for forty years. He also served on the board of directors of the Pioneer Memorial Home.

In earlier years Tony enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and umpiring at softball games. More recently, he liked to play cards and snooker along with other activities at the Adult Activity Center in Orange City.

Survivors include his wife of more than 78 years, Ann, of Orange City; two daughters, Audrey Ann Haverdink, of Ankeny; and Arla Beth Stover, of Spirit Lake; six grandchildren, Michael and Natalie Haverdink; Michelle and Bob Goodrich; Marlon and Cora Haverdink; Brandon and Andrea Highstreet; Kylie and Damon Jackson; and Shyla and John Christensen; and twelve great-grandchildren, Jared, Noah, and Luke Haverdink; Shelby and Grant Goodrich; Emily, Andrew, and Rachel Haverdink; Sidney Peterson and Peyton Jackson; and Jayda and Ayden Christensen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Virgil Haverdink; and his fifteen siblings, Dick, Jake, Joe, Henry, Ann, Johnnie, Fannie, Marie, John, Cornelius, Gertrude, twins in infancy, William, and Bert.

Memorials may be directed to the Pioneer Memorial Home.
