Carla Lee Buchholz was born on August 28, 1938 in Osceola, Nebraska to D.E. ‘Buck’ and Laura Virginia (Lundborg) Buchholz. When she was in 8th grade, her family moved to Storm Lake, Iowa. Carla attended Storm Lake High School; she was the drum majorette, a member of the Methodist church choir, and active in Rainbow (Eastern Star girls club) during her high school years. After graduating high school in 1956, she attended The University of Iowa for two years, Buena Vista University for one year, and graduated from St. Joseph Hospital. She then worked for two years at Buena Vista County Hospital as a lab supervisor and medical technologist.

Carla met Lyle ‘Whitey’ Naeve while attending BV University and they were married on September 16, 1962. Whitey was drafted into the United States Army and they moved to Olympia, Washington where he was stationed immediately following their wedding ceremony. Carla worked as a supervisor at the blood bank at Madigan Army-Airforce Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. They moved back to Storm Lake in February 1964 for a short time and moved to Davenport, Iowa that summer. In 1966, they moved to Spencer, Iowa. While living in Spencer, Carla was a member of the Newcomers Club, Welcome Wagon, Eastern Star, taught Sunday School, and was on the PTA council. Carla enjoyed golfing and bird watching. She also was a member of a card club. Whitey and Carla were strong supporters of the Shriner’s; Carla was a member of the Daughters of the Nile and they traveled to many parades and other Shriner events.

In 1986, they moved to Hospers, Iowa and in 1989, they moved to Orange City, Iowa. In 1990, Carla began working as a teller at Northwestern Bank, also known as the Windmill Bank. Carla and Whitey both retired in 2000 and Whitey passed away on August 22, 2000. Carla loved to travel and made many trips with a group of girlfriends from Orange City. Due to some health concerns, Carla moved to Park Place Estates in Le Mars in 2016.

Carla was a devoted Iowa Hawkeyes fan. She loved watching Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball games. She geared up for every single game; she knew all the players, team stats, and was truly a dedicated fan. Carla also enjoyed listening to and discussing politics. Carla was currently a member of the United Methodist Church of Le Mars.

Carla is survived by her daughter: Laurie (Derek) Bird of Le Mars; daughter, Nancy (Justin Lode) Naeve of Spencer, Iowa and their children: Brittney and Alex Rosado, their children Mila-Grace and Maverick, and Bubba Lode and Kenz Schindler; her sunshine (granddaughter), Danica (Ben Grauer) Bird of Iowa City, Iowa; other extended relatives; Storm Lake High girlfriends; and her Park Place Estate family.

Carla is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Whitey.

Carla was so grateful for the dedicated and loving care given to her by her daughter, Laurie, for the last four years.

The family would also like to thank the staff at Park Place Estates and Floyd Valley Hospital for their love, compassion, and excellent care given to Carla.
