Rod “R.D.” Schuller, 73, formerly of Le Mars, unexpectedly passed away on December 19, 2020, in Arizona.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 31, 2020 at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars. Reverend Janis Christensen will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ. Social distancing and wearing a mask will be required. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Rodney Dean Schuller was born on 12/14/1947, the son of John and Dorothy Schuller in Sheldon. Rod graduated from Floyd Valley High School in Alton, with the Class of 1966. Following high school, Rod attended Northwest Missouri State University and Mankato State University for his undergraduate studies. He, ultimately, graduated with his optometric doctorate degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL in 1972.

Rod was united in marriage to Virginia ”Gini” Rae Vant Hul on June 20, 1969, at the Alton Reformed Church. Upon graduation in 1972, they moved to Bloomfield, Iowa where Rod joined the Gilfillan Medical Clinic. In 1980, Rod brought has family back to northwest Iowa; joining an office in Le Mars to which would become Le Mars Optometric Center, P.C. that he would own until his retirement in 2010.

After his wife, Gini’s, early passing; Rod was very fortunate to find a new special friend. In June of 2013, Rod met Helen Manzer, who enjoyed their time together between Arnolds Park and Rio Verde, Arizona.

He leaves lasting friendships all over the country from his 20+ years at Okoboji, his conventions and fishing trips to Canada with optometric friends, and his most recent time in Arizona.

Rod‘s love for golfing, poker, the Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Vikings, and Iowa Hawkeyes were well-known.

Most of all, Rod loved his six grandchildren and his times with them.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Matthew Schuller and his wife, Dr. Kim of Freedom, Wis.; and their children Alexander “AJ”, Benjamin, and MacKenzie; and a daughter, Heather Nemer of Plymouth, Minn.and her children Jack, Max, and Teagan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia “Gini” Schuller; his father and mother, John and Dorothy Schuller; and his father and mother-in-law, William and Mildred Vant Hul. Rod was, also, recently joined in death by his son-in-law, Adam Nemer.
