Daniel Robert Madson

Daniel R. Madson, 88, died at his home, one week after celebrating his 88th birthday with his family. A memorial service will be held April 4, at the First Presbyterian Church, Salem, Oregon. Private interment will be at City View Cemetery under the direction of City View Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made at A.C. Gilbert Discovery Village at 116 Marion Street, NE, Salem, Oregon 97301 or Meals on Wheels at 685 Marion Stree, Salem, Oregon in memory of Dan Madson.

Daniel R. Madson, 88 was born to Dr. William E. and Carol Robey Madson in Hawarden, Iowa.

Dan was the second Eagle Scout in Hawarden. He graduated from Hawarden High School in 1940 and from Iowa State University in 1947 with a B.S. in Forest Management. He served with the Army 800th Engineers in WWII. Dan was very proud of the fact that he hd attended everyone of the all schools reunions that were held for Hawarden High School.

Dan was a forester with the Bureau of Land Management in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and Salem, Oregon, until he retired in June 1981. He taught defensive driving at BLM and Western Oregon State College, was well known for his balloon animals at the Brooks Historical Museum and A.C. Gilbert Children’s Discovery Village (received “Great Friend of Kids” award in 2003). Member of Chemeketans Hiking Club, Friendship Force of the Mid-Willamette Valley, an elder at First Presbyterian Church, helped with Girl Scouts and was a Meals on Wheels driver for 25 years.

Dan is survived by his wife, Marie Bosch Madson; daughters, Danell (Mark) VanderSchans of Elk Grove, California, Carol (Marty) Lee of Tigard, and Robin Weiland of Redwood Shores, California; brother Donald C. (Anita) Madson of Illinois; five grandchildren, Kevin, Kelsey, Andrew, Allyson and Bryce.
