Last rites were held at the First Reformed Church in Orange City Thursday, for John Doppenberg, Sr., who died on Monday, April 13. Mr. Doppenberg had been failing since suffering a stroke at his home, March 28. He was 73 years, two months and 16 days of age.

Dr. H. Colenbrander conducted the funeral service and interment was made in Middleberg Cemetery.

Born in the Netherlands January 28, 1880, John Doppenberg came to this country as a youth of 18. He was married February 11, 1907, to Elizabeth Baartman, who preceded him in death on April 21, 1952.

On June 16, 1943, he married Mrs. Henrietta Van Peursem, who died December 9, 1946.

Of nine children born to the Doppenbergs, two, Peter and Mathilda, preceded their father in death. Survivors are four sons, John, William, Peter, and Bernard; and three daughters, Alice (Mrs. Frank B. ) Vander Zwaag, Elizabeth (Mrs. Peter) Langstraat, and Carrie (Mrs. John Ter Horst). All live in this community except Peter, whose home is Paramount, California.

Among the other survivors are five step-children, Henry Van Peursem, Marion Van Peursem, Mrs. John Luchtenberg, Mrs. John B. Draayer, Mrs. Myron Oolman; 26 grandchildren; one brother, Gerrit, of Sioux Falls, a brother Stephen and a sister, Gerritje, of the Netherlands.
