LaNita Rae was born on October 12, 1942, in Sheldon, the daughter of Neal and Florence (Niehaus) Den Hartog. She was raised in Hospers, where she attended Hospers Elementary and graduated from Floyd Valley High School.

On July 15, 1960, she married Dennis Dean Van Roekel at her parents’ home. They made their home on a farm southwest of Sheldon. She was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where she participated in Ruth Circle, was the president of Women’s Ministries, and taught Sunday School. They were able to celebrate their sixtieth anniversary this year.

Lanita had a big heart for her kids and their school activities. She was on the committees to begin the Sports Booster Club and the first After-Prom Party at Floyd Valley. She also enjoyed square dancing, card club, “shopping till she dropped,” bird watching, and helping on the farm. She especially loved her flowers and watching her grandchildren in their different activities. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and was the peacemaker of the family. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.
