Mr. Clifford Van Schepen, age 81, of Hull, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2020, at Sioux Center Health.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, July 23, at 4:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Van Rathbun will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Following the interment, there will be a time of visitation at the church from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Clifford Wayne was born on April 3, 1939, the son of Louis and Winifred (Clearbout) Van Schepen. He was raised in Hull where he attended the Hull Christian School and graduated from Western Christian High School. He then enlisted in the United States Army Reserve.

On June 14, 1963, he married Judith Iris Vander Zwaag at the First Reformed Church in Hull. They built a new house in Hull where they raised their family and remained for all of their married life. In earlier years, Cliff owned a repair shop with Rich Ten Braak and Ade Van Engen. He spent most of his working years farming and was especially fond of harvest season. Judith passed away on January 2, 2013, in Hull, after more than 49 years of marriage.

Cliff was a member of the First Reformed Church in Hull and served on the Hull Volunteer Fire Department. He liked to spend time outdoors, driving his Ranger and riding on his Harley trike. He also enjoyed polka music, reading farm magazines, and had an appreciation for antique cars and Farmall tractors.

Survivors include his two sons and their wives, Chris and Cheri Van Schepen, of Des Moines; and Jeff and Julie Van Schepen, of Hull; six grandchildren, Nicole Pranke, Austin Van Schepen, Jacie Van Schepen, Dawson Van Schepen, Jaden Van Schepen, and Maggie Van Schepen; a sister, Lyla Halde-Harris, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two sisters-in-law, Harriet Vander Zwaag, of Sioux Center; and Gail Vander Zwaag, of Spirit Lake; two brothers-in-law, Claude Vander Zwaag, and his wife, Betty, of Orange City; and Bill Manthey; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jody Lynn Van Schepen, at the age of 12; a sister, Phyllis Manthey; four brothers-in-law, Henry Vander Zwaag, Glen Vander Zwaag, Dave Halde, and Fred Harris; and a niece, Jane De Zeeuw.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Research or the Christian Care Fund at the First Reformed Church.
