DEATH CALLS E. J. SCHOLTEN, LYNDEN

Evert J. Scholten, father of Joe and Evert Scholten, former Alton residents now living at Lynden, Wash., died there Sunday at the home of his son, Joe, at the age of 85 years. Mr. and Mrs. Scholten came to Alton from Zutphen, Netherlands, in the spring of 1913. Mrs. Scholten died at Holland, Minn., some years ago.

The following is from the Lynden, Wash. Tribune:

Funeral services for Everett Scholten, who passed away Sunday evening at the home of his son, Joe, in the Greenwood district, were held yesterday. A private service was held at the home at 1 p.m., followed by the services in the First Christian Reformed church at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. D. Hollebeek, pastor of the First Church, officiated. Burial was made in the Monuments Cemetery under the direction of the Gillies Funeral Home.

Mr. Scholten at the time of his passing was 86 years, one month and fifteen days old. He had been ill for only three days before his passing. During the ten years that he had lived in the Lynden district, he had made many friends who were saddened to learn of his passing.

Mr. Scholten was born in The Netherlands on October 1, 1851, and he lived in the old country until twenty-four years ago when the family moved to the United States. Settling in Alton, Iowa, he lived there for one year after which he moved to Minnesota where he resided thirteen years. Following the death of his wife in Minnesota eleven years ago, he moved to Lynden where he had lived for the last decade.

Surviving relatives include three daughters, Mrs. Herman Van Lee [or Van Loo], Mrs. Charles Bearandsen, Mrs. Gerrit J. Jansen; six sons, Everett, William, Joe, Henry and Albert [yes, only five were listed], all residing in the Lynden district with the exception of Albert, who lives in Holland; 56 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

His FindaGrave.com page has Evert Jan Scholten, born 21 Oct 1851 in Zutphen, Gelderland, Netherlands; died 5 Dec 1937 at Lynden, Washington; buried in Monumenta Cemetery, Lynden. Wife Geertruida Adriana van Engelen Scholten (1852-1926). Seven children listed: Marie Elizabeth Scholten Van Loo (1878-1952); Evert John Scholten (1879-1953), Johannes Hendrikus Scholten (1883-1968), William Karel Scholten (1885-1974), Johanna Wilhelmina Scholten Jansen (1888-1960), Hein Scholten (1889-1972), and Hendrikus Scholten (1892-1968).

In the 1920 U.S. census he (68), with wife Gertrude (67) and daughter Gertrude (33), is renting a farm in Holland Village, Pipestone County, Minnesota. They immigrated in 1913, naturalization status unknown. In the 1930 census he (78) is living in Lynden with his son-in-law Gerrit J. Jansen, a greenhouse farmer, daughter Johanna, and their family.

The Gelderland, Netherlands, civil registration index on Ancestry.com has Evert Jan Scholten, born 21 October 1851 in Zutphen, Gelderland, parents Evert Jan Scholten and Maria Elisabeth Haijtink.

New York Passenger and Crew Lists on Ancestry.com show Evert and Geertruida Scholten, both age 61, and several family members, formerly residents of Zutphen, sailing from the port of Rotterdam on the ship Potsdam, arriving in New York on 20 March 1913, destination Alton, Iowa.
