DR. H. HOSPERS DIES IN MICHIGAN

News of the death of Dr. Henry Hospers of Holland, Mich., was received Wednesday by relatives. He was the son of Senator Henry Hospers who was the most influential man in early Orange City history. Dr. Hospers, who was a minister and professor in Hope College, was a cousin to C. G. Hospers, Mrs. Gerrit Slobe, W. H. Hospers and Mrs. A. J. Kolyn. He was a nephew of Mr. C. Hospers.

DR. H HOSPERS OVERLEDEN

Maandagmiddag, 25 Oct., is te Hol¬land, Mich., overleden Dr. Henry Hospcrs, in den ouderdom van 68 jaren. — Sinds 1918 was ZEw. verbonden met het Western Theological Seminarie aldaar, als leeraar in de Hebreeuwsche taal.

Dr. Hospers werd te Pelia, Ia., ge¬boren, en genoot zijne opleiding eerst aan Northwestern Classical Academy te Orange City, en toen aan Hope College te Holland, Mich. Daarna bezocht hij voor een jaar de Vrije Universiteit te Amsterdam, Ned., alwaar hij studeerde onder den bekwamen Holl. Theoloog Dr. Abr. Kuiper. Vervolgens studeerde hij aan het Theological Seminarie te New Brunswick, N. J., en aan Hope College behaalde hij den graad van Doctor in de Godgeleerdheld.

De overledene was een zoon van wijlen Senator Henry Hospers, de stichter van de Hollandsche nederzetting in Sioux County.

Hij wordt overleefd door zijne weduwe en drie kinderen, nl. Roelof Hospers te Harrisburg, Pa., Mrs. H. Den Herder te Zeeland, Mich., en Ds. Henry O. Hospers te Utica, New York, benevens twee broeders, Isaac Hospers te Olin, Ia., en Ds. G. J. Hospers te East Williamson, N Y, drie zusters, Mrs. (Ds.) T Rosendaal te Volga, S. D.; Mrs. (Ds.) W J Duiker te Holland, Mich., en
Miss Hendrine Hospers, zendelinge onder de Indianen te Dulce, New Mexico, alsmede door vijf kleinkinderen.

De begrafenisdiensten werden Donderdag, 28 Oct., gehouden, aan het sterfhuis en in de Hope Ger kerk te Holland, Mich., van welke gemeente hij lid was, onder leiding van Dr S. C. Nettinga, zijnde president der seminarie, en Ds. Jas. Wayer, leer¬aar der 1e Ger. gem, te Holland. De ternardebestelling had plaats op de Oakhill begranfplaats te Grand Rap¬ids, Mich.

DR. H. HOSPERS DEAD

Monday afternoon, Oct. 25, Henry Hospers died at Holland, Michigan, aged 68 years. Since 1918 he was associated with the Western Theological Seminary there, as a teacher of the Hebrew language.

Dr. Hospers was born in Pella, Iowa, and first trained at Northwestern Classical Academy in Orange City, then at Hope College in Holland, Mich. After that he attended the Free University in Amsterdam, Netherlands, for a year, where he studied under the skilled Dutch theologian Dr. Abr. Cooper. Subsequently he studied at the Theological Seminary in New Brunswick, N.J., and at Hope College he received the degree of Doctor of Theology.

The deceased was a son of the late Senator Henry Hospers, the founder of the Dutch settlement in Sioux County.

He is survived by his widow and three children, namely Roelof Hospers of Harrisburg, Pa., Mrs. H. Den Herder of Zeeland, Mich., and Rev. Henry O. Hospers of Utica, New York, as well as two brothers, Isaac Hospers of Olin, Ia., and Rev. G. J. Hospers of East Williamson, N.Y., three sisters, Mrs. (Rev.) T. Rosendaal of Volga, S.D., Mrs. (Rev.) W. J. Duiker of Holland, Mich., and Miss Hendrine Hospers, missionary among the Indians at Dulce, New Mexico, as well as five grandchildren.

The funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 28, at the home and in the Hope Reformed church in Holland, Mich., of which congregation he was a member, under the direction of Dr. S. C. Nettinga, president of the seminary, and Rev. Jas. Wayer, teacher [minister?] of the First Reformed congregation in Holland. Burial took place at the Oakhill cemetery in Grand Rapids, Mich.

His death certificate shows him living at 26 East 128th Street, Holland, Mich.; a professor at Western Theological Seminary, 20 years; wife Anna Duiker; born Feb. 15, 1869 in Pella, Iowa; parents Henry Hospers and Hendien[?][actually, it’s Hendrina] Overkamp, both born in the Netherlands; died at 11:45 a.m. October 25, 1937; cause, hypertension, acute heart failure, duration 5 years’ contributory cause, hyperthyroidism, onset 1935.

His FindaGrave.com page adds his parents’ dates: Henry Hospers (1830-1901) and Hendrina Overkamp Hospers (1837-1907), and his spouse, Anna C. Duiker Hospers (1870-1958). Thirteen siblings and half siblings are listed, but none of his children. There are photos of the headstones of him and his wife, and a portrait photo of him.
