From the Sioux County Capital, October 7, 1937:

Jake Markus, a former resident of Orange City, died Sept. 25 at Harrison, South Dakota. He was buried Wednesday at Corsica, So. Dak. Attending the funeral from here were Gerrit Fikse, Samuel Muilenburg, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Bonnema and Mr. and Mrs. Dingeman Ver Steeg.

The South Dakota Death Index on Ancestry.com has Jacob Markus, died 25 Sep 1937, Yankton County, South Dakota.

FindaGrave.com has Jacob Hendrikus Markus Sr., born 11 April 1860 in Pella, Iowa; died 25 September 1937 in Yankton, South Dakota; buried in Harrison Cemetery, Harrison, SD; parents Johannes Hendrikus Markus (1821-1887) and Adriana Bollard Markus (1826-1881); spouse Susan Eernisse Markus (1866-1918). Five siblings and eight children listed. His wife Susan died in Minnesota and is also buried in the Harrison Cemetery.

The 1930 U.S. census for Orange City has Jacob Markus (70), born in Iowa, parents born in the Netherlands, no occupation; wife Anna B. (54), children Eunice Bekman (17) and Victor Bekman (15). [Submitter’s note: Anna (nee Muyskens) was his second(?) wife and he was her second husband. Her first husband was Henry K. Bekman, who died in 1915. Anna married Jacob Markus in 1927 and died in 1933; see her obituary for more information. He returned to his children in South Dakota after her death.]

In the 1920 census Jacob as a widower was farming in Holland Township, Douglas County, South Dakota, with his children Clarence H. (25), Richard E. (21), and Naomi A. (20).
