CADET “BILLY” DEMOTS SUCCUMBS FOLLOWING OPERATION

Robert William “Billy” De Mots, 19, the oldest grandson of Mrs. Ella De Mots of Sioux Center died last Thursday at West Point, New York following an appendicitis operation performed there a week before his death. He was a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.

“Billy” as he was known to his close friends, was the son of William and Marie (Mettendorf) De Mots, who now make their home in Los Angeles. The parents who moved from Sioux City where Mr. De Mots was with the Security National Bank for several years, went by airplane to West Point, New York for funeral services. At the services there the flag which draped the coffin was presented to his mother as a Keepsake.

Cadet De Mots was with a Sioux City National Guard Company at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, a year ago when he received the appointment to the military academy. He was graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in midyear 1940.

Mr. and Mrs. William De Mots accompanied the body to Sioux City arriving on Saturday morning. Final funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church with Reverend Mr. Dunn officiating on Monday afternoon.

Surviving besides the parents are a brother, younger brother Jackie, who came by train from Los Angeles for the funeral.

A letter of condolence sent to the parents, Mr. and Mrs. William De Mots from F.B. Wilby, Major General United States Army at West Point stated that Cadet De Mots was an excellent student and ranked among the ten highest in all his studies.
