Born: February 28, 1858
Died: November 21, 1935Mrs. Evertje De Mots, a resident of Sioux Center since 1883, died Thursday, November 21, at her home here after an illness of several months.
Mrs. De Mots, nee Schuurkamp , was 77 years and 9 months of age. She was born in the Netherlands on February 28th, 1858, and came to the United States as a bride, early in the year 1883. The couple went first to New Holland, South Dakota, but soon came to Sioux Center. At that time but few pioneers had settled in the vicinity of what today is Sioux Center. They built a sod house, one of the first about a block east of the site where the residence of Mrs. Jerry Reisma stands. Here they lived for a short while before emigrating to Douglas County, South Dakota, where they lived on a farm. Six years later they returned to Sioux Center, where Mrs. De Mots has since made her home. This is where all of the seven children were born. One child, Jacob, died in infancy.
The others are Dr. Henry De Mots and Gerrit De Mots, both of Sioux Center; John of Orange City; Miss Elizabeth of Sioux Center, her mother companion and housekeeper; Mrs. Hubert Muilenburg and Mrs. Howard Jelgerhuis of Orange City.
There are nine grandchildren eight of whom were present at the funeral services on Monday. The eldest, the former Miss Verna De Mots, is married and resides in California.
Brief services were held at the home, followed by services at Central Reformed Church, where Reverend Keuning officiated, assisted by Reverend Dykstra. The three sons and three grandsons were pallbearers. Favorite hymns of Mrs. De Mots were played and sung during the service.
Always a kind neighbor and friend, she will be kindly remembered by many outside of her immediate family.
