DRIESEN, VANMAANEN, VANBENTHEM

From the Rock Valley Bee, April 4, 1968:

Funeral services for Klaas Driesen, 90, longtime Rock Valley resident, were held Monday, April 1, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Leonard Van Drunen officiating.

Burial was in Valley View Cemetery under the direction of Porter Funeral Home, with Glenn Visser, Jay Dean Driesen, Floyd Vander Bosch, Anthony Van Beek, Merle Tilstra and Kenneth Winters serving as pallbearers. Mrs. Jake Oostra was organist for the congregation as they sang several hymns.

Mr. Driesen died at Hegg Memorial Hospital, March 28, following a brief illness. He was born Nov. 18, 1877 in the Netherlands and came to the United States in 1910. He and Nellie Van Maanen were married March 14, 1914 and they farmed in the area until they retired 27 years ago. The past few years Mr. and Mrs. Driesen lived at Valley Manor.

Survivors include the widow, a son, John D. Driesen of Rock Valley and a daughter, Mrs. Elmer Visser of Inwood. Two sisters, Mrs. Trentje Rus and Mrs. Guy Blankespoor, both of Rock Valley, and 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Louis Winters, and a son, Jimmie.

There is a photo of the joint headstone of Klaas and Nellie.

His Sioux County World War I draft registration card (Sept. 1918) shows him farming at Hudson, Lincoln County, South Dakota; his surname is now spelled Driesen (his signature); medium height and build, blue eyes, light brown hair.
