From the Sioux County Capital, Sept. 2, 1937:

MRS. JOHN PRINS

Mrs. John Prins died last Monday and was buried Thursday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Prins came to America some 45 years ago. Twenty-eight years ago they retired from farming and came to live in Sioux Center.

Mrs. Prins is survived by her aged husband, 89, and four children who are Martin Prins, Perkins; John Prins, Sanborn; Henry Prins, McPherson, Kansas; Mrs. Henry Vander Berg of this place. Mrs. Henry Mulder another daughter died two years ago from burns received in a gasoline explosion, and Mrs. Frank Schut some 18 years ago. There are 27 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Mrs. Sidney Schut, a grand child, and Mr. Schut have been caring for the aged couple. When a little girl, she made her home at Prins' while she attended the Public school.

MRS. JOHN PRINS PASSED ON AT AGE OF 88

Mrs. John Prins, Sr., died at 7:30 on Monday morning at the age of 88 years. The funeral will be held Thursday, from the home at 1 o’clock and at 1:30 from the 2nd Christian Ref. Church, Rev. M. Keuning officiating. Mr. Prins is 89 and in fair health.

Surviving her besides her husband are four children, 27 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. The children are: Henry of McPherson, Kansas; Martin of Perkins; John of Sanborn; and Mrs. Henry Vander Berg of Sioux Center. Four children passed on before, two in infancy, Mrs. Henry Mulder two years ago, and Mrs. Frank Schutt 18 years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Prins came to the U.S. from Holland in 1882, and farmed in Sioux County until 1909 when they retired to Sioux Center.

The Alton Democrat, August 27, 1937, Sioux Center news, adds that she was born in the Netherlands on December 13, 1848, maiden name Grace Vieldt, and that they had farmed 3-1/2 miles north of Sioux Center. [Birth index records for her children on WieWasWie.nl all give her name as Geesje Veld.]

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Prins, Geesje, b. 1848, d. 23 Aug 1937, ss Jan, Memory Gardens, Sioux Center IA. Her FindaGrave.com page has Geesje Veld Prins, born 13 Dec 1848 in Hoogeveen, Drenthe, Netherlands, died 23 Aug in Sioux Center. Spouse Jan Prins (1848-1942, married 1873). Children: Henry John Prins (1876-1963), Martin Jans Prins (1878-1954), Anna Prins Mulder (1884-1936), Sena Prins Schutt (1887-1923), John Prins (1890-1978), Jessie Prins Vande Berg (1894-1968).

Her death certificate has her as Mrs. Jan Prins (no forename); born Dec. 13, 1850 in Hoogeveen, Netherlands; resident of the U.S. 55 years and of Sioux Center 28 years; father Albert Velt, mother’s name unknown to the informant, Martin Prins; died in Sioux Center at 7:30 a.m. August 23, 1937; cause, apoplexy.
