From the Sioux County Capital, April 6, 1944:

OBITUARIES – FRANK DE HAAN, Sr.

Frank De Haan, sr., 88, passed away Tuesday, March 28 in a local hospital. He was born in the Netherlands in 1856 and came to America with his parents in the year 1857 at Pella, Ia. Mr. De Haan came to Sioux county when he was 16 years of age and worked on a farm.

In 1884 he married Miss Margretta De Gooyer. To this union 8 children were born. The 6 living children are Mrs. A. Bogaard of Sheldon, Mrs. Joe Bloemendaal of Orange City, Mrs. P. H. Van Horsen of Bellflower, Calif., Henry and John of Orange City and Dr. Frank De Haan of Sioux Center.

Preceding him in death are his wife, a son who died in childhood, and Albert who died at the age of 28. Surviving him besides his children are his sisters, Misses Mary and Jennie De Haan and his brothers Gerrit and Bert De Haan all of Orange City and his 11 grandchildren.

Mr. De Haan was a member of the First Ref. Church of Orange City and served as elder for 31 years. He was also active in the instruction of Catechism.

Funeral services were held Friday in the First Ref. church with Rev. H. Colenbrander officiating. Interment was made in the local cemetery.

His FindaGrave page shows him born 17 Nov 1856 in Hattem, Gelderland, Netherlands; died 8 March [sic] 1944 in Orange City. Parents Hendrik De Haan (1826-1910) and Aaltje Gerritje Van Der Maten De Haan (1828-1890). There is a photo of the joint headstone of Frank and his wife Margaret. Three of his siblings and four of their children are listed.
