From the Alton Democrat, March 26, 1937, Rock Valley news:

John Emil Carlsen[Carlson]

Emil Carlsen, the well-known cobbler at the Brink and Hubers Shoe Store passed away at a Sioux City hospital on Tuesday morning after being ill for some time. Mr. Carlsen was forced to give up his work at the local shoe store several weeks ago when he became ill after having several teeth extracted and went to his home at Sioux City to recuperate. He had been employed at the local shoe store for the last five years.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock from the Nelson-Berger Funeral Chapel. The Rev. G. R. Forsberg, pastor of the First Covenant Church, officiated. Burial was made in the Logan Park Cemetery. He had reached his sixty-sixth birthday. Survivors include the widow, three sons and one daughter. J. A. Brink and R. DeCook attended the last rites on Thursday.

From De Volksvriend, March 25, 1937 (in Dutch):

Much like the above obit, with this additional or different information: Spells his surname Carlson. He had lived the last 44 years in Sioux City, and his family now lives on Plum Creek Road No. 2119. For the last seven years he was employed as shoemaker in the J. A. Brink shoe store and was a master of his trade.

His death certificate has John Emil Carlson, resident of the U.S. and of Sioux City 44 years; wife Jennie; born in Varmland, Sweden, February 12, 1861 [evidently a typo, since it also gives his age as 66 years 1 month 4 days]; parents’ names not known to the informant, R. C. Carlson; occupation, shoemaker in a shoe repair shop, in this occupation 44 years; died in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sioux City, at 5:50 a.m. March 16, 1937; cause, carcinoma of stomach. “XRay showed extensive malignancy Rapid loss of weight.”

His FindaGrave page has no additional details, but gives his birth year as 1871, with a photo of his and his wife’s joint headstone: Carlson / John E. 1871-1937 / Jennie C. 1883-1968.

The 1930 U.S. census for Sioux City shows John E. Carlson, age 57, head of household, owns his home worth $9000, lives on a farm, has a radio set, born in Sweden, immigrated 1903, naturalized, occupation shoe repairer, Olson Shoe Store; wife Jennie S., age 47, born in Sweden, immigrated 1903, naturalized; three children, all born in Iowa, parents born in Sweden: C. Rudolph (27, a builder doing carpenter work), Fred R. (14), and Rosemary (5).

The 1925 Iowa state census shows them with four children: Clarence R. (22), Herbert E. (19), Fred W. (9), and Rose M. (1). John E’s father is John Carlson, mother’s name unknown; Jennie’s parents are John Peterson and Anna Swanson.

The 1920 census for Sioux City has Jno E. Carlson (47), born in Sweden, immigrated in 1895, naturalized in 1901, a farmer, owns his farm; wife Jennie (35), born in South Dakota, parents born in Sweden; sons Rudolph C. (16), Herbert A. (14), and Fred R. (3-3/12); and mother-in-law Anna Peterson (73), widowed, born in Sweden, immigrated 1897[?], an alien.

The 1910 census for Sioux City shows John Carlson (37), born in Sweden, immigrated 1893, naturalized, a shoemaker in a shoe store, married 8 years; wife Jennie (28), born in Sweden, immigrated 1892, mother of 2 children, both living; sons Rodolph (7) and Herburt (5); mother-in-law Anna Peterson (64), widowed, born in Sweden, no immigration year given.
