From the Sioux County Capital, March 4, 1937:

MRS. J. F. HEEMSTRA

Relatives were advised of the death of Mrs. J. F. Heemstra, nee Adriana Muilenburg of Hudsonville, Mich., who died at her home Saturday, Feb. 27. She is survived by her husband, Rev. J. F. Heemstra, one son Clarence R. Heemstra of Fenton, Mich. and one daughter Lucille, Mrs. John Hager of Grand Rapids, Mich. and four grandchildren. Other survivors are sisters and brothers Mrs. Anna Mak, Manchester, S.D.; J. A., H. A., C. A. and P. A. Muilenburg; Mrs. John Popma; Misses Emma and Marie Muilenburg; Dr. G. A. Muilenburg, Rolla, Mo.; Mrs. J. H. Bruggers, Coopersville, Mich. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Hudsonville and interment was made at Holland, Mich.

A slightly briefer obituary (in Dutch) in De Volksvriend (March 4) adds that she was 71 years old; says that her son Clarence R. lives in Crosswell, Mich.; and that she was born Jennie Muilenburg, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Mulenburg of Orange City.

From the Sioux Center News, March 4, 1937:

Word was received here Wednesday of the death of Mrs. Adriana Heemstra, wife of Rev. J. F. Heemstra, former Sioux Center pastor. Her death occurred at Hudsonville, Mich. Feb. 27. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 3. Deceased was well known in Sioux county being the daughter of Antione Muilenberg of Orange City and has many relatives living here.

Her death certificate has Mrs. Adriana Heemstra, wife of Rev. John F. Heemstra, resident of Hudsonville, Michigan; born October 14, 1866 in Pella, Iowa; parents Anthony Muilenburg and Elizabeth De Heer, both born in the Netherlands; died in Butt Hospital, Grand Rapids, Michigan at 4:38 a.m. February 27, 1937; cause, arteriosclerotic myocardial degeneration, duration 15 years; contributory cause, broncho-pneumonia, duration 10 days; buried in the Pilgrim Home Cemetery, Holland, Michigan.

Her FindaGrave.com page gives her husband’s full name as John Frank Heemstra (1870-1938) and her birth date as 14 Oct. 1867 – although the photo of their joint headstone that is included on the page shows her birth year as 1866.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1895 shows groom John F. Heemstra, age 25, resident of Orange City, a theological student, born in Orange City, parents T. Heemstra and Syke Hoekstra; bride Jennie Muilenburg, age 28, resident of Orange City, born in Pella, Iowa, parents A. Muilenburg and Elizabeth De Heer; married in Orange City August 28, 1895.

In the 1900 U.S. census the family was living in Sioux Center: John F. Heemstra (30), born Nov. 1869, a clergyman, married 3 years; wife Adriana (32), born Oct. 1867, mother of 2 children, 2 living; son Clarence R. (3), born Dec. 1896 in New Jersey; daughter Lucie E. (1), born Sept. 1898 in South Dakota.

In 1910 they were living in Orange City, where John F. was the academy principal. In 1920 they were living in Holland, Michigan, where John F. was a clergyman, 4th Reformed Church, Clarence R. was a public school teacher, and Lucile E. was attending school. In 1930 John F. and Adriana were living in Hudsonville, Michigan, where John F. was pastor of the First Reformed Church.
