From the Sioux County Index (Hull), March 19, 1937:

P. J. Brouwer Dropped Dead In His Home Saturday Eve.

Shortly after arriving home Saturday evening from doing some shopping. Mr. Peter J. Brouwer dropped dead in his home from a heart attack. He had been in his usual health during the day and had attended to his work at the water works plant until nearly six o'clock. Mr. Brouwer had a host of friends, all of whom join in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, with Rev. G. H. Douwstra officiating. All the business places of the town were closed for an hour during the funeral.

Peter J. Brouwer was born at Andyk, Holland, March 5, 1871, being a little over sixty-six years old at the time of his death. Mr. Brouwer came to this country in 1888 and soon afterwards to Sioux county . On March 12, 1896 he was united in marriage to Johanna Hermina Wiersma. They lived near Orange City one year, coming to the vicinity of Hull forty years ago.

Five children were born to them: Gertrude, Mrs. Juffer of Ireton; John and William of Chicago; Anna, Mrs. John Kragt of George; and Richard of Hamlontown, Iowa. Besides his wife and children, Mr Brouwer is survived by twenty grandchildren, seven full brothers and sisters and two step-sister

Peter Brouwer Called Beyond

The community was shocked Saturday evening when the report went around that P. Brouwer had died suddenly. He had been in town after supper to get the groceries and as he entered the house he said he wasn’t feeling well and he collapsed due to heart attack.

Mr. Peter J. Brouwer was born on March 5, 1871 at Amdyk, Holland. He came to this country in 1888 at Orange City, Iowa. He was married March 12, 1896 to Johanna Hermina Wiersma. The first year of married life they lived near Orange City and for 40 years they lived in and around Hull.

He leaves to mourn his sudden departure his wife Johanna and five children, Gertrude. Mrs. G. Juffer, Ireton, Iowa; John, Chicago, Ill.; William also from Chicago; Anna, Mrs. J. Kragt, George, Iowa; Richard, Hamlontown, Iowa; 20 grandchildren; also 4 brothers, 3 sisters and two step sisters and a host of friends.

Mrs. [i.e., Mr.] Brouwer was a member of the town council and took much interest in its welfare. He will be missed by many. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1 o’clock at the home after which burial took place and services were held at 2 o’clock at the First Reformed church in charge of Rev. Douwstra assisted by Rev. Jager. Interment in Hull cemetery.

His death certificate adds his parents, John Brouwer and Grietje Koorman; occupation, farmer, last worked at this occupation 3-1-1917; died at 8:00 p.m. March 13, 1937; cause, angina pectoris.

His FindaGrave.com page gives his name as Peter J. “Pieter” Brouwer, born 5 March 1871 in Andijk, Medemblik Municipality, Noord-Holland, Netherlands; died 13 March 1937 in Hull; buried in Hope Cemetery, Hull. Father, John P. Brouwer (1840-1928). Seven siblings listed. Spouse Johanna Hermiena Wiersma Brouwer Hollander (1874-1957, married 1896). Three of his children are listed: Gertrude Brouwer Juffer (1898-1988), William Peter Brouwer (1902-1963), and Anna Brouwer Kragt (1905-1997). His wife’s FindaGrave page shows that after Mr. Brouwer’s death she married Teunis Jakobus Hollander (1877-1948).
