From the Sioux Center News, February 18, 1937:

DOON MAN DIES FROM BROKEN BLOOD VESSEL

Word was received here early this week of the death of Ike Visser of Doon vicinity, for many years a well known farmer near Maurice, following an accident which occurred Sun. eve. while traveling near Edgerton, Minn. Deceased and his son were traveling in a truck and as the car struck a bump Mr. Visser struck his head against the roof of the cab with such force as to break a blood vessel. He died at 10 a.m. Monday.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 18 at the Protestant Ref. Church at Doon at 1:30, following a short service in the home. Rev. Ver Meer will have charge.

The remains will be buried in the Doon cemetery beside those of his wife who passed away in 1919. Deceased is survived by the following children: Henry, Pleum, Henrietta, Marie, Bastian, Peter, Dena and Hilda.

RESEARCH NOTES

His death certificate has Isaac Visser, resident of Doon, Iowa; born August 17, 1867 in Holland; parents names not known to the informant, Peter Visser; widowed, wife Bertha Lems; a retired farmer; died in the Van der Wilt Hospital, Rock Rapids, at 10:00 a.m. February 14, 1937; cause, skull fracture with intra-cranial hemorrhage, occurred 2-14-1937; contributory cause, lumbar puncture, also occurred 2-14-37; diagnosis via X-ray and bloody spinal fluid. Accident occurred in an automobile on highway at Luverne, Rock County, Minn.; car jolted and his head hit the top.

WieWasWie.nl has a marriage index entry for groom Izaak Visser, age 25, born in Oost-en West-Barendrecht, parents Hendrik Visser and Hendrika van Vuren; bride Bastiana Lems, age 22, born in Oost-en West-Barendrecht, parents Pleun Lems and Maria de Jong; married 30 March 1893 in Barendrecht, Zuid-Holland

The 1915 Iowa state census card for Ike Visser (age 47) shows him living in Sherman Township, Sioux County.

The 1920 U.S. census shows Isaac (age 52, widowed) and six children (all born in Iowa) farming in Doon Township, Lyon County. He immigrated in 1896 and was naturalized in 1908.

The 1925 Iowa state census for Doon Township has Isaac (57), wife Bertha (52), both born in Holland, and children Bert, Peter, Dena, and Mary. Isaac’s parents are Henrik Visser and Kate Ver [illegible]. Bertha’s parents are Paul Lems and Mary De Young. No explanation was found for why she appears in this census, or whether she is the same person as Bastiana Lems.

The 1930 U.S. census for Doon Township shows Isaac Visser (62), widowed, immigrated in 1894. Living with him are son Peter (23), daughter-in-law Dena W. (19), and granddaughter Alvina (0/12).
