Mrs. Callan of Council Bluffs Dies at Age 85

Mrs. Kate Callan, 85, who spent most of her life in this vicinity, suffered a stroke Sunday and died at Mercy hospital in Council Bluffs Tuesday night. The body was brought to the Barnard Funeral home in Hawarden. Funeral services will be held in St. Mary's church with burial here.

Katherine Burke, one of ten children of Mr. and Mrs. William Burke, was born on the farm in Virginia township, Union county, which her parents had homesteaded in the early 1870's on March 25, 1875.

She taught school for ten years and in 1904 she married M. C. Callan at St. Mary's Catholic church and the couple resided in Hawarden. Mr. Callan, who was a cattle buyer and feeder, died in 1949. A couple of years later she went to Council Bluffs to make her home with a daughter and sold her home here.

Mrs. Callan, a charter member of the Hawarden Woman’s club, served as its president for a time. She was a great reader and gave numerous book reports when a member of the History and Travel department, and later, as a member of the Literature and Art department. An active member of St. Mary’s parish, she served in the Altar and Tabernacle society. She also belonged to the Royal Neighbors.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Helen Crowder. Survivors include one daughter, Anne, Mrs. Lloyd Gregerson of Council Bluff, three sons, Bill of Durand, Wis., Gene of Defiance, Ohio and Cameron of St. Cloud, Minn.; a sister, Mrs. Minnie Johnson of Hawarden; 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
