From the Hawarden Independent, March 18, 1937:

Death of Dr. DeBruin’s Father

C. DeBruin, pioneer of Rock Valley, father of Dr. H. C. DeBruin of Hawarden, passed away Sunday morning, March 7th, at the advanced age of 80 years. Mr. DeBruin had not been in good health all winter but was up and around until about a week before his death and from that time on he failed rapidly until death claimed him. Mr. DeBruin resided in Rock Valley 48 years and for 25 years he was employed by the Foppe Pioneer Store Co. He retired from his work three years ago due to his advanced years and failing health. Besides his wife he is survived by three sons and one daughter.

From the Sioux County Capital, March 11, 1937:

Case De Bruin passed away at his home in Rock Valley on Sunday morning, March 7 at the age of 80 years. He had been ill for some time.

Mr. De Bruin was born on February 2, 1857 in De Lier, The Netherlands. He lived there until 1881, when at the age of 24, he came to America.

On January 2, 1885 he was married to Miss Annie Wassen, at New Holland, S. Da. Mr. and Mrs. De Bruin lived in New Holland for eight years. In 1893 they moved to Rock Valley, and have lived here ever since. They lived in the same house in the west part of town for forty five years. Two years ago on January 2, 1935 Mr. and Mrs. De Bruin celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. They were able to enjoy this day very much.

Until two years ago, Mr. De Bruin was a clerk in the Foppe Pioneer store where he worked for twenty five years.

Mr. De Bruin is survived by Mrs. De Bruin and four children who are: Mrs. Herman Oldencamp and Edward De Bruin of Rock Valley, Herman De Bruin of Hawarden and Lane De Bruin of Patterson, N.J. One daughter, Tillie, died in infancy.Mr. De Bruin is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Doorndyn of Maassluis, and Cornelius De Bruin of Rotterdam, both in the Netherlands.

Funeral services for Mr. De Bruin were held in the Christian Reformed church in Rock Valley, Tuesday afternoon, March 9. Rev. John Gritter was in charge of the services. Burial was made in the Valley View cemetery, south of Rock Valley.

His death certificate gives his birth date as Feb. 2, 1857 in the Netherlands; parents Andreanas De Bruin and Anna Van Dolen; wife Anna De Bruin; occupation, store clerk; died at 8:30 a.m. March 7, 1937; causes: angina pectoris, onset 3-2-37?, coronary thrombosis, onset 3-5-37, and pulmonary edema, onset 3-6-37.

His FindaGrave.com page has him as Cornelis “Case” De Bruin (but the photo of his headstone has just C. De Bruin); born 2 Feb 1857 in De Lier, Westland Municipality, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands. Wife Anna Wassen De Bruin (1865-1945). Children Herman C. De Bruin (1888-1945), Edward De Bruin (1890-1949), Leon De Bruin (1893-1978), and Tillie W. De Bruin Oldenkamp (1900-1969).
