From the Rock Valley Bee, July 17, 1936:

John[sic] Vanden Berg died suddenly at his home in Rock Valley at 4:30 o’clock, Wednesday afternoon, July 15. He was in his usual health in the forenoon and worked in his garden. After dinner he complained of not feeling well and went up stairs to lie down. He became rapidly worse until the end came. It is thought that the extremely warm weather hastened his death. A further account will be given next week.

From the Rock Valley Bee, July 24, 1936:

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR B. VAN DEN BERG

B. Vanden Berg, whose sudden death was briefly mentioned in last week’s Bee, passed away at his home in Rock Valley last week Wednesday afternoon. As stated last week Mr. Vanden Berg was in his usual health during the forenoon and worked in his garden. In the afternoon he complained of not feeling well and went upstairs to lie down. He passed away at 4:30 o’clock that same day.

Mr. Vanden Berg was born in the Netherlands, July 22, 1854, where he grew to manhood. He came to this country thirty-two years ago. He resided near Sioux Center and Perkins for several years and then moved to Rock Valley, where he lived for about fourteen or fifteen years. He was a man who was highly respected by all who knew him.

Besides other relatives and friends, Mr. Vanden Berg is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. Walter Bakker, residing northeast of Rock Valley, and Mrs. J. Eppinga, of near Inwood. One son, John B. Vanden Berg, died about two months ago.

Funeral services were held in the home Saturday, at 12:00 o’clock and at the Old Reformed church in Rock Valley at 2:00 o’clock, and the remains were taken to Valley View Cemetery.

From the Sioux County Capital, July 23, 1936, Rock Valley news:

John[sic] Vanden Berg died suddenly Wednesday afternoon, when he was overcome by the heat while digging potatoes in his garden. Mr. Vanden Berg had been in his usual good health up until the time of his death. He was 82 years old.

Mr. Vanden Berg was an old resident of Rock Valley. Before moving to Rock Valley he lived on a farm near here. Mr. Vanden Berg and his family came to Rock Valley from the Netherlands in 1904. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Jake Eppinga of Inwood and Mrs. Walter Baker of Rock Valley and several grandchildren. One son, John Vanden Berg, jr., preceded him in death on May 24, 1936.

Funeral services for Mr. Vanden Berg were held Saturday afternoon at the Old Reformed church. They were in charge of Rev. John Vander Hoef. Burial was made in the Valley View cemetery.

His FindaGrave.com page also has him as Beert, with a photo of his headstone; born 23 July 1854 in Nunspeet, Gelderland, Netherlands; spouse Janna Vlijm Van Den Berg (1853-1937); children Alice Van den Berg Eppinga (1884-1969), John B. Van Den Berg (1886-1936), and Jennie Vanden Berg Baker (1891-1968).
