From the Hawarden Independent, October 26, 1944:

DIED SUDDENLY TUESDAY MORNING

Jake Doctor of Minneapolis, former well known Hawarden resident, passed away suddenly at the veterans hospital there Tuesday morning.
His sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Horton of Hawarden, had visited with him at the hospital on Sunday.
Funeral services will be held at Minneapolis Friday afternoon and interment will be in Memorial cemetery in that city.

Jake Doctor grew up on a farm, west of Hawarden, and lived here for many years. He was a Spanish-American war veteran. Later he went to Minneapolis and for a number of years was employed by the American Automobile association, but for two years he was employed in a war plant in Minneapolis.

He is survived by his wife and one sister, Mrs. Horton of Hawarden. Jane Doctor, a niece of Mr. Doctor, was reared in his home following the death of her father, Matt Doctor.

U.S. National Cemetery Interment Control Forms on Ancestry.com shows him as sergeant, Band, 6th Infantry, Spanish American War, honorably discharged 1 Sept 1902, Latin Cross and State of Minn. on headstone.

Minnesota death certificate no. 1944-MN-005271 shows him born December 18, 1877 in Chicago, Illinois; parents Michael Doctor, born in Germany, and Harriet Schroeder, born in Maine; married, wife Florence S. Doctor, age 53; veteran of Spanish American War; usual occupation, processing engineer; usual residence, Deephaven Park, Wayzata, Minn.; died at Fort Snelling Res.[Residence?], Veterans Administration, where he had been a resident for 1 month, 10 days, at 11:55 a.m. October 24, 1944; cause: coronary thrombosis, acute, sudden; contributory causes: carcinoma right lung, primary; cardiac hypertrophy; pleural adhesions.
