Tragedy at Jesse Peebles Home

The community was shocked when word came that Mrs. Maxine Peebles Jones had shot herself Tuesday night and was instantly killed at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Peebles, southeast of Ireton. Whether the shooting was accidental or intentional was not ascertained. She was 20 years old and leaves a son two years old. She is also survived by her parents and brothers and sisters. This is a terrible blow to all of her loved ones as well as to all who knew her.

From the Hawarden Independent, July 9, 1936:

The funeral of Mrs. Maxine Peebles Jones was held from the Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon. The church was filled to capacity with relatives and friends and neighbors of the deceased. Rev. Geo. Scheider took for his sermon text; "Let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in me." The quartette, Frank Crane, Madge Satterlee, Mrs. Fern Hooper and E. E. Gandy, with Mrs. Arthur Bartlett at the piano, sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "Good Night Here but Good Morning Up There" and "Somewhere the Sun is Shining." Interment was made in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Maxine Peebles was born Sept. 6, 1915 on a farm near Craig where she lived her entire life, receiving her education in a nearby school. She was united in marriage Dec. 20, 1933, with Jack Jones to which union one son was born and lives to mourn the death of his mother. She also leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Peebles, two brothers, Glenn and Ralph, and two sisters, Lucille and Phyllis. She also leaves her grandfather, Byron Peebles, and her grandmother, Mrs. Geo. Phillips, besides many other relatives and a host of friends who admired her. Her sudden, tragic death, which occurred at the farm home June 30, 1936, was a severe shock to all. Her age was 20 years, 9 months and 24 days.

From the Alton Democrat, July 10, 1936:

YOUNG LADY TAKES LIFE

Mrs. Maxine Peebles Jones, 21, met her death here at about midnight last Tuesday night at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jessee Peebles, farmers residing several miles south of Ireton, by a shot from a 32 calibre revolver. The shooting followed a quarrel between a suitor and her eldest brother.

Funeral services were held from the M. E. church here Friday with the Rev. George Scheider in charge. The remains were interred in the family burial plot in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Jones was nearly 21 years of age, is survived by two sisters, Mrs. D. Elliot of Craig, Mrs. W. Smith of Le Mars, two brothers, Glen and Ralph of this vicinity, a two-year-old son, her divorced husband and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Peebles.

Her death certificate has her as Maxine Peebles, divorced, husband Jack Jones; born September 6, 1915 in Plymouth County, Iowa; parents Jess Peebles and Maude Philipps, both born in Ireton, Iowa; died at farm home in Grant Township, Plymouth County at 10:30 p.m. June 30, 1936; cause, “self-destruction by shooting self in throat severing vein and fracturing neck.”

She appears in the Sioux County Cemetery Index as Jones, Maxine (Peebles), b. 1916, d. 1936, Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ireton, IA.

Her marriage record on Ancestry.com has groom J. E. Jones, age 24, residence Hawarden, a farmer, born in Lexington, N.C., father John Mack, mother Mary Ette Jones; bride Maxine Pebbles, age 18, residence Struble, Iowa, parents Jes. Byrom[sic] Pebbles[sic] and Maud Dorothy Phillips; married at Lemars, Iowa, December 20, 1933.

The parish register for St. John’s Lutheran Church at Craig on Ancestry.com includes a baptism entry for Jacky Dean Jones, son of Jack Jones and Maxine nee Peebles, born July 21, 1934, baptised March 31, 1940, sponsored by Mr. Ralph Peebles and Mrs. Maude Peebles.
