Funeral services held Thursday

Funeral services were held at the First Reformed Church in Orange City at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, October 26, for Mrs. Jacob "Jake" Van Marel, 97, resident of the local nursing wing (off and on) for approximately five years, who died October 23.

Services were conducted by the Reverend R. Van Heukelom and the Reverend Alvin Eissens and burial was in West Lawn Cemetery at Orange City.

Mrs. Van Marel, the former Cornelia Nienhuis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mella Nienhuis, was born in Holland July 26, 1875, and came to the United States with her parents at the age of 9, in 1884. The family settled on a farm west of Orange City.

She was married to Jacob Van Marel at Muscatine, Iowa, March 15, 1899. Ten children were born to this union, seven of whom survive.

The survivors include William of Orange City, Arie of Steen, Minnesota, Irwin of Orange City, Gertrude (Mrs. Gerrit H. Te Slaa) of Hull, Irene (Mrs. William Te Slaa) of Hull, Mabel (Mrs. Fred W. Cleveringa) of Sioux Center and Cynthia (Mrs. Clarence Cleveringa) of Sioux Center.

She was preceded in death by three children, Tina, who passed away at age 9; Jake Jr., and Mrs. Henrietta Riphagen.

There are 32 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
