JOHN J. SCHLUND HAS PASSED AWAY

News of the death of John J. Schlund, at his home in Anaheim, Calif., reached here Wednesday morning. Mr. Schlund was a former pioneer resident of Rock Valley, having resided on his farm west of Rock Valley for many years before moving to California some twenty-five years ago. Mr. Schlund was well known in Rock Valley and vicinity. He visited here frequently since making his home in the west.

Mr. Schlund was a man who took a keen interest in the affairs of the community in which he lived. He was one of the pioneers here and did his full share in the upbuilding of this community. He was a clear thinker, as well as a true and trusted friend. Having thought things out, he had the courage to stand by his convictions. His many friends here will be grieved to learn of his passing.

Mr. Schlund was taken sick with influenza during the holidays and he suffered another attack shortly before his death, which seemed to weaken his heart, and ultimately caused his death.

He broke the sod with a team of mules, and established a home where he lived until coming to California in 1911.

“While residing in Sioux county, he was school treasurer of Sioux township from 1888 until moving to California, and was President of the State Bank of Rock Valley, Iowa, from 1905 until coming to California.

“In the spring of 1914 he bought the land on South West Street, Anaheim, and planted it to oranges, where he made his home the remainder of his life. His death was caused by a heart failure while trying to start his car at his home on February 19, 1936 at the age of 77 years.
