MILITARY RITES FOR FRED VAN LAAR JR. SATURDAY

Fred Van Laar, Jr. passed on at his home in Alton shortly after ten o’clock Wednesday morning July 31. An invalid for nearly two years, he had appeared to be gaining gradually until stricken Saturday morning with an attack from which he did not rally. His passing is a shock to his family, friends and “buddies” of Floyd Post, American Legion.

A full military funeral was held on Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church, at two o’clock, with preceding service at the home at 1:30 o’clock.

Fred Van Laar was born May 13, 1896, son of Gerrit and Susan (Den Beste) Van Laar, at Alton. At the time of his death he was 44 years, two months and 18 days of age. He was united in marriage in 1922 to Miss Edna Voss. To this union five children were born: Gerald, Gerrit, Carl, Betty Mae and Lloyd, who with their mother survive; also his father, Gerrit Van Laar, a brother, Peter, and sister, Mrs. Nick Marra, all of Alton. His mother passed away within the past few months.

He was first stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage about two years ago and was at the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines for some time thereafter. He was hopeful of making a full recovery but was never able to resume his trade of painting. He continued cheerful in spite of his affliction and appreciative of all that was done for him. He served the local Legion Post as adjutant for some years.

Note: Van Laar was a nephew of Fred Den Beste of Sioux Center. The Den Beste family attended the funeral last Saturday.
