Russell Eugene "Gene" Coons, 60, of Amarillo, Texas, formerly of Hawarden, died Wednesday, January 22, 2003 in Amarillo. Funeral services was January 27 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden with the Reverend LeRoy Seuntjens officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangement.

Russell Coons was born September 22, 1942 in Hawarden, the son of Russell and Loretta (Muth) Coons. He was very active in school sports, band, FFA and 4-H. He lived in rural Ireton until graduation. He graduated from West Sioux High School in 1961. He worked in retail groceries and in the beef packing industry.

He married Cathleen Campbell. In 1976 he joined the USDA meat-grading service and worked in this field until retiring in 2002. Mrs. Cathleen Coons died August 16, 2002. He married Maria De Lourdes Hernandez.

Survivors include his wife, Maria; daughter, Shelly Tehan-Moon; son-in-law; Allen Moon; stepsons, Efrain and Jessie Robert Esparza; granddaughter, Madison Moon, all of Amarillo; and a brother, Myron Coons of Ireton.
