From the Sioux County Index (Hull), February 21, 1936:

Wm. Doeksen Sr. Passed Away Saturday Morning

After an illness of several weeks with a heart ailment and kidney trouble, Mr. Wm. Doeksen Sr., aged seventy seven years, passed away last Saturday morning at nine o’clock.

Mr. Doeksen was born in the Netherlands, December 8, 1858, where he was married and where some of the children were born. His wife’s name was Trintje De Boer. The family moved to the Hull vicinity in 1895. Mr. Doeksen was a very active man during his life, was a friend of all who knew him and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends alike.

Besides his aged wife, Mr. Doeksen is survived by ten children, twenty eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The children are: William of Rock Rapids; Winnie, at home; Mrs. Rena Marra of Hull; Mrs. Lena Lubbers of Orange City; Mrs. Kate Vander Meer of Hull; Gerrit of Grandin, North Dakota; Marie, at home; Mrs. Nellie Vander Meer of Rock Valley; Ray of Sioux City; and Arie of Alliance, Nebraska. He is also survived by two sisters and one brother who reside in the Netherlands.

The funeral was held Wednesday from the house and from the First Reformed church, with Rev. G. H. Douwstra officiating, assisted by Rev. L. Vermeer of the Protestant Reformed church. The Index joins in extending sincere sympathy to the bereaved wife and children.

WM. DOEKSEN, 1858-1936

Funeral services for William Doeksen, 78, who passed away at his home Sat., Feb. 16, after a three weeks illness, were held Wed. in the First Ref. Church. Rev. G. Douwstra officiated. The remains were laid to rest in Hope cemetery here.

William Doeksen was born Dec. 8, 1858 in Midsland Terschelling, Netherlands. On Sept. 9, 1880 he was united in marriage to Trientje De Boer and in Feb. 1887 came to this country. They lived near Alton for eight years then moved to a farm 1½ miles north of Hull where they lived for 21 years and 1916 moved to the town of Hull where they lived at the time of Mr. Doeksen’s death.

He is survived by his widow; ten children, William of Rock Rapids; Winnie, Mrs. Tunis Marra (Rena), Mrs. Chas. Vander Meer (Kathryn), and Marie all of Hull; Mrs. Bert Lubbers (Lena) of Orange City; Gerrit of Grandin, N.D.; Mrs. Albert Vander Meer (Nellie) of Rock Valley; Ray of Sioux City and Arie of Alliance, Nebr.; also thirty-seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He states that he was born at Kaard, Terschelling, Netherlands on December 8, 1858; his father was William Doeksen (deceased); he emigrated to the United States, sailing from Antwerp, Belgium, on February 9, 1889; resided at Hull from 1889 to the present; was naturalized at Orange City on September 29, 1896. The application includes a photograph. (The “New York Passenger and Crew Lists” on Ancestry.com for the Volendam when it returned from Rotterdam to New York on 17 Aug 1924 shows his wife as Tryntje, crossed out and the Americanized Catherin written in.)
