Attend Guckenberger Funeral

Matt Guckenberger, former Alton resident, died Sunday at his home near Dell Rapids, So. Dak. at the age of 40 years. He had been ill for several years. He is survived by Mrs. Guckenberger (nee Hansen) and one daughter, Irma. The family formerly lived on the Hansen farm east of Alton. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s church, Dell Rapids. Those from Alton attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Mousel, Mr. and Mrs. John Hansen. Mr. and Mrs. Nick Hansen, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hansen, Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Hansen, and from Oyens, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Hansen.

The South Dakota Death Index has Matt Guckenberger, died 15 March 1936, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.

FindaGrave.com has Matt Guckenberger, born 21 May 1888 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin; died 15 March 1936 in Minnehaha County, SD; buried in Saint Marys Catholic Cemetery, Dell Rapids; parents Sabastian Guckenberger (1840-1918) and Mary Guckenberger; siblings Mary E. Guckenberger Noll (1875-1901) and Joseph Guckenberger (1883-1964); spouses Gertrude K. Evans Guckenberger (1892-1915) and Anna Hansen Guckenberger (1889-1974, married 1919); child Erma Mary Guckenberger Wood (1915-2008). There is a photo of his headstone.

The 1930 U.S. census for Dell Rapids show him, Anna, and Irma living at 802 Ninth Street; he owns his home valued at $6000 and works as a laborer in an implement shop. In 1920 they were farming in East Orange Township, Sioux County, with Anna’s younger brother George L. Hansen living with them. In the 1910 census he is in Logan Township, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, living with and working for farmer Anton Heineman.

The South Dakota marriages index on Ancestry.com has husband Matt Guckenberger, residence Dell Rapids, age 26, nationality American, bachelor; wife Gertrude Evans, residence Dell Rapids, age 21, nationality American, maiden; married in Dell Rapids January 8, 1914.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1916/1917 has groom Mathew Guckerberg[sic.], age 30, resident of South Dakota, a farmer, “race” German, born in Wisconsin, parents Sebastian Guckenberg and Mary Schlitz, second marriage; bride Anna Ch. Hansen, age 27, resident of Alton, “race” German, born in Alton, parents Peter Hansen and Susan Konz, first marriage; married at Alton, September 19, 1916.

His World War I draft registration card (June 1917) gives his residence as Dell Rapids; birth date May 21, 1887, Oak Creek, Wisconsin; farming for himself; dependents, wife and daughter under age 12; no prior military service; medium height, slender build, grey eyes, dark brown hair.
