Funeral Tuesday For Early County Seat Resident

In the early morning of January 26 Mrs. Peter Van Es Sr. passed away at her home in Orange City following an illness with cancer.

Mrs. Peter Van Es nee Anna Balkema was born on June 17, 1869 near Gibbsville, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. She came to Sioux County in the late 80’s and was married to Peter Van Es on July 1888. He preceded her in death October 1, 1933.

To this union were born 8 children, 2 of whom died in in fancy.

Surviving are, Tillie, Mrs. John Blom of Orange City; Gertrude, Mrs. Gerrit Vander Wilt of Orange City; Jennie, Mrs. Joe Vander Wilt of Roscoe, California; Antoinette, Mrs. Edward Swynenberg of Orange City; Pearl, Mrs. Fred Kraai of Orange City; and Reverend Peter Van Es, Missionary to the Indians at Macy, Nebraska.

Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 3 brothers and 1 sister, namely: Albert Balkema of Orange City; Nic Balkema of Sioux Center; Jas. Balkema of Newkrik and Mrs. John Van Rooyen of Clearwater, California.

Mrs. Van Es confessed Christ as her personal Savior and united with the church in her early youth. She was characterized by an ever-growing and deepening christian experience which culminated in one of the most glorious home goings possible among men.

Mrs. Van Es with her husband lived on their farm near Newkirk until 1920 when they moved to Orange City. She had been active as a Sunday School teacher for many years. A member of Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City it was her delight to partake in the various activities and organizations of the church until the time of her death.

She was a tower of strength in her home, her church and among her friends. "For her to live was Christ." Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in Trinity Reformed Church with Reverend R. Ongna officiating.
