Funeral services were held for Mrs. John (Dena) Van Gelderen of Sanborn on September 30, 1977, held at the Sanborn Funeral Home. She passed away at the Hartley Hospital on September 27 at the age of 78. Howard Anthony and Ellis Tyson officiated the service. Burial was at the Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley.

Dena Dykstra was born to Charles and Aartje (Van Surksum) Dykstra on November 22, 1898 in Plymouth County near Seney, Iowa. On November 20, 1919, she was united in marriage to John Van Gelderen of Rock Valley. After their marriage they lived in Rock Valley until 1936 when they moved to Fairview, South Dakota. In 1942 they moved to a farm near Melvin, Iowa and lived there until they moved to Sanborn in 1949. Her husband, John, preceded her in death on December 11, 1972.

She is survived by two children, Arvid of Melvin, Iowa and Priscilla (Mrs. Lawrence Siemonsma) of Sheldon, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
