Arend Van Gelder was born May 1, 1863 in The Netherlands, and came to the United States while still a young man, living here for over fifty years.

He was united in marriage to Miss Stientje "Christina" Opgelder in 1884, who preceded him in death in 1936, having been married for fifty-two years.

Since her death he made his home in Sibley with his daughter Mrs. Sip Starkenburg.

He had been in seemingly good health and was bedfast only two days before his death, passing away on Friday, November 3, at the age of 78 years.

To this union six children were born, three preceding him in death, Bert, John and Dena; Anna, Mrs. Sip Starkenburg of Sibley; Ed Van Gelder of Ocheyedan and Paul Van Gelder of Sheldon.

Services were held Monday afternoon at the funeral parlor in Sibley and in the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, at 1:30 o'clock, with Reverend Vander Brink, pastor of the Christian Reformed Church of Sibley and Reverend R.R. Bronkema officiating. Interment was made in the Orange City Cemetery.
