Mr. Cornelius J. Van Geest died Tuesday evening, Dec. 3rd after a lingering illness at his home in Rock Valley at the age of 80 years.

Cornelius Van Geest was born in De Lier Suid Holland. June 1, 1866. He came to this country and to South Dakota March. 25, 1884.

He was married to Jennie Maas at New Holland, South Dakota on February 29, 1632. later he moved to this vicinity where he farmed for many years. Retiring he moved to Rock Valley where he has resided for the past 30 years.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Mrs. Jennie Van Geest and eight children Klasena (Mrs. Teunis Verros) of Hawarden, Iowa; John Van Geest of Hudson. South Dakota; Gertie (Mrs. Chas. Den Hartog) of Rock Valley; Anna (Mrs. Ed Den Hartog) of Lester Iowa: Joe Van Geest of Rock Valley; Delia (Mrs. R.H. De Vries) of Murdo, South Dakota; Martha (Mrs. William Gibson) of Greenville, Iowa; and Marie (Mrs. Stanley C. Stevens) of Grundy Center, Iowa. One brother Martin Van Geest of Brookings, South Dakota; and one sister Mrs. Ben Vredeveld of Grand Rapids, Michigan, also survive him.

He is also survived by twenty-six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

Funeral services were held at the home at 1:30 o'clock and, 2:00 at the Christian Reformed Church. Dr. Herman Kuyper officiated at the services. Mrs. August De Ruyter and Mrs. David Altena sang two favorite Hymns, “Sunshine in My Soul” and “Saved by Grace” accompanied by Wilhelmina Van Maanen the organist who played the funeral march. Interment was made in Valley View cemetery. The pall bearers were grandsons, Bob Den Hartog, Wilbert Verros, Bob Gibson, Donald Van Geest, Neal Den Hartog and Richard E. Den Hartog.

Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ben Hasseler of New Holland, South Dakota; Mrs. Henry Vander Pol of Corsica, South Dakota; John Hasseler and Mrs. William Muckey of Harrison, South Dakota.
