Jacob Van Diepen was born in Dronrys, Netherlands November 18, 1888. At the age of five years he came with his parents and two sisters to Boyden, Iowa to make their home. He attended the public school from which he graduated in 1905. He taught the country school the next year. Then he went to Iowa State College for a course in Electrical Engineering for four years. Thereafter working at his trade in Rock Valley, Sioux Center and near by towns. In 1918 he volunteered for service and joined the 88th Division in World War I. He served as corporal in Co. F. 313 supply train until he was hospitalized in France. Later he was hospitalized in Hampton, Virginia, returning home September 3, 1919. After his discharge at Fort Monroe, Virginia, he returned to Boyden where he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. A. Miller. From 1919 until 1956 he was rural mail carrier on route 2 out of Boyden,

On June 14, 1931, he was married to Ara King of Onawa, Iowa. To this union were born three children: Carolyn (Mrs. Harvey Vis), Don D. and Bonnie Crystal who died in infancy.

He is survived by his wife, his daughter of Camp Hanfory, Washington and his son, Don at home, one grandson, Loren Gene, and two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Miller of Boyden and Mrs. E.H. Beldt of Sheldon.

He was in good health until suddenly Sunday night when he was stricken with a heart attack. He was preceded in death by his parents and a baby daughter.

Services were held Thursday at 1:30 P.M. at the Legion Hall. Interment was made in the Boyden Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Van Horete, Albert Grooters, Fred Starkweather, Tom Van Dieoen, William Kwikkle and Herman Murter.

He was a member of the William Monster Post of the American Legion for years, and a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and especially the children around town, In the summer he would always treat the children to a ride in his Ford that they would enjoy so much.
