JOHN VANDER VELDE ANSWERS SUMMONS---ROCK VALLEY PIONEER IS DEAD AT 72----JOHN VANDER VELDE SETTLE IN COUNTY 38 YEARS AGO

John Vander Velde passed away at the William Schouten home in Rock Valley Tuesday afternoon, aged seventy-two years, four months and fifteen days. Mr. Vander Velde had not been well several months. A few weeks ago he was taken to the hospital in Sioux Falls where he submitted to an operation but he continued to fail. He was brought to Rock Valley and cared for by Mrs. Schouten where he received the best of care, but he continued to fail until the final summons came.

During his younger days Mr. Vander Velde followed the occupation of a farmer. He retired from the farm just before the World War and resided in Rock Valley until after the death of his wife, seven years ago. He spent two years in California and later entered the Holland Home in Sheldon where he lived ?? years ago or until he was taken sick.

He was born in the Netherlands July 16, 1859. He spent his early life there and grew to manhood. He was married to Margaret De Bie, and came with his family to this country in 1893, and lived in a farm near Rock Valley until he retired and moved to town.

Mr. Vander Velde was a good Christian man, a faithful member of the First Reformed Church. He was quiet and was a friend of all who knew him.

Besides other relatives and many friends, Mr. Vander Velde leaves two sons, Will and Peter, both of Rock Valley.

Funeral services will be held Friday at one o'clock at the home of his son, William Vander Velde, and at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley at two o'clock P.M.
