Hitjo "Joe" Vander Veen passed away Tuesday night, December 18, after a being ill for some time.

He was born in the Netherlands sixty-eight years ago last September 19. He came to this country in 1899 and except for a few years in Kansas his home has been in or near Sioux Center ever since that date. He was married to Mary Van Kley on April 12, 1910, at Sioux Center.

Mr. Vander Veen was a hog buyer for several years before his marriage in 1910 at which time he went to the farm.

Thirteen years ago he moved from the farm to his property just south of town where he engaged in gardening and truck farming.

He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Gertrude, and five brothers. They are Bruno of Kalamazoo, Michigan; Zwier, Netherlands; Jake of Almina, Kansas; John of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and Anko of Sioux Center.

Jake Vander Veen and his son James were the only ones able to attend the funeral. Funeral services were held Friday at the home and at the Second Christian Reformed Church. Reverend L. Ypma officiating. Interment was in the local cemetery.
