Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie Tuttle, 92, who passed away Monday, will be held Thursday (today) at 2:00 p.m. in the Vander Ploeg Funeral Chapel at Sheldon.

OBITUARY

Martha Shaffer Tuttle was born February 23, 1872, at Elkader, Iowa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Shaffer. (Her mother was the former Jane Osborn.) At the age of one year she accompanied her parents to a farm northeast of Boyden, which they homesteaded. She attended the country school in the vicinity and grew to womanhood on this farm.

On October 19, 1900, she was united in marriage to Harry O. Tuttle of Boyden, Iowa. To this union one son, Wilson, was born. The family lived in Boyden several years and also in Matlock where Mr. Tuttle worked as cashier of the Matlock Bank. Mr. and Mrs. Tuttle also lived in Sheldon for a number of years while caring for her aging mother and father.

For a time Mrs. Tuttle resided at the Anchorage Rest Home in Sheldon, and the past six years had resided at the Restmore Home in Rock Rapids where her pleasant personality and active mind was a joy to her many friends.

Two months ago Mrs. Tuttle fell, while visiting friends in Sheldon, and broke her hip. Since that time she had been a patient at the Sheldon hospital where she passed away Monday, August 3, at 7:30 p.m., having reached the age of 92 years, 5 months and 10 days.

She leaves to mourn her passing, two grandsons, Donald Tuttle of Chicago Heights, Illinois, and Wallace Tuttle of Dolton, Illinois; ten grandchildren, a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Harry Tuttle, her son Wilson; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tim Shaffer; her brothers Joe Shaffer and Chester Shaffer; and her sister, Mrs. Addie Chadwick.

Her husband died in May, 1935, at his father-in-law’s house in Sheldon. See his obituary, posted separately. The 1940 U.S. census, following her husband’s death, shows her living alone at the same house, which she now owns.

The 1900 Sioux County marriage register shows groom Harry O. Tuttle, age 23, resident of Boyden, a barber, born in Boyden, parents W. S. Tuttle and Zach Lanning; bride Mattie Shaffer, age 28, resident of Boyden, born in Clayton County, Iowa; parents Timothy Shaffer and Mary Jane Osborne; married by a Methodist Episcopal Church pastor, no date or place of marriage given, but recorded on October 20, 1900.
